JThought I would do this as a work in progress, as it something I enjoy doing. The tree I believe is rotting naturally as a lot of old trees do, they sometimes get very black and look like they have been on fire or struck by lightening. We have a couple in the woodlands where I work, they are checked regularly for safety’s sake, they are known to have been rotting away for the last twenty years or more. I have included the original sketch, through to current stage. Don’t know why but started at the front and working backwards, not my normal practice.

Thanks Tessa, I get bored sitting around reading so need to have plenty on the go. I’m thoroughly enjoying this painting, it seems to be coming together, but I won’t push it to quickly ( a habit of mine). I was a bit annoyed that the title came out wrong and I cannot change it, still I can put it in the gallery under a different title. This is the latest added some lines to the field to try and break up the greens. 8

Well Paul, as always loving this WIP! I really like the bark of the tree and stone wall. The composition is great too.

Thank you all for you kind comments . For those who like the detail I’m using 90lb cold pressed watercolour paper that’s 9 1/2 inch by 12 1/2 inch. The paper is made from cotton and a lignin free cellulose that is internally and externally sized to improve absorption. Made a bit of a hash of the upper background, so removed the colours, then remembered that some of the higher levels will be covered  by the foliage on the tree. I tend to overthink things sometimes and end up making more work, need to step  back a bit more at different stages. Added the prominent branches and twigs so that I can build up the leaves in the upper part of the tree. I have two painting on the go at the moment so that I can have a change, one attached and the other is a study  of autumn fruit, this I can do when I feel like a change and something small to do.

Both coming along nicely Paul, I like the colours in the tree that corresponds with colours in the wall, it really pays of sometimes to take your time and not rush things, and the autumn fruits and berries are beautifully painted, spot on !!

Thank you Hilary and Linda, I agree taking time is so important , just occasional  I tend to rush and inevitably regret it. This is the latest stage , have some more foliage to add and a small repair where the green paint puddled oil the cantered of the leaves . I will finish the trunk off last but complete the branches and wall first.

Here we are with the finished painting, I am stopping here as I like the tree as it is and don’t want to overwork it. I thought about doing more on the bark but decided I would the be fiddling with it and end up not happy about the finished item. I have as always enjoyed doing a work in progress this one particularly.
