Some of you may remember over a year ago I painted a picture of a young German soldier standing next to a schnell-boot..
The young man in the painting was my neighbours father.
My neighbour, Alex, sadly lost his life in Sept last year in tragic circumstances, and I have been asked by his partner to paint a tribute to him which will hang in our local pub.
Alex was the ‘go to’ man in this village. If you needed something fixing, he’d know the right person for the job (if he couldn’t fix it himself, that is). If you needed a hand with something he’d be the first to come over. If you needed someone to shout at he’d happily let you have a rant with him over a pint (and you would always feel better). There’s a huge void around here without him.
The painting is a section of Alex’s motorbike. He went to the Isle of Mann every year with his partner and biking friends to watch the TT and take part.
The idea is, that those who knew him, would know who the painting is about.
The Winnie the Pooh character is reference to their ‘team’ on their annual TT holidays - ‘Team Winnie’. It’s on a box canvas, so around the sides of the canvas will be several ‘Pooh’ quotes.

Thank you for your comments. I do hope I do it justice.
I haven’t done much more on the picture yet other than block in some base colours. It took a long time to get the angle and crop of the bike to my liking, but I think I like it so far. The metal of the wheel in the bottom left corner will be yellow, so that will tie in with the yellow of Winnie. I haven’t shown it to Alex’s partner as yet.
Today she sent me some of their favourite ‘Pooh’ quotes to go around the sides, so I have been playing with lettering and seeing what might fit. I’m trying to emulate the style of lettering from a gin bottle they used to bring home for us. I wonder if I should enquire with the gin company itself whether it’s ok for me to modify and use their font. I’ve made up most of the letters myself, based on the style of their label. Thoughts?

You won't be mass-producing your piece; it's not going to be for sale; I think therefore that you have no need to worry about the gin company getting uppity. If you'd feel happier being quite sure, then ask them - in the circumstances, I doubt they would object (and maybe the font isn't actually unique or original to them anyway).

Sorry to hear about your friend's death. I think this will be a great tribute. I'm looking forward to seeing the finished work.
As for the font, I don't think many companies have a custom-made font for them. You could try using this site to see whether the font is something custom-made for the company or a font they purchased.
