I think it may have been summer 2020 issue? Worth a look anyway Alan!
Thanks Dawn and Alan. I shall have a look later. 👍
"a very bad book by David Hockney" you say; Robert. Where's your evidence that he's wrong? To even things up I say his book is so interesting and well thought out, I couldn't put it down.
At risk of unleashing the 'Wrath of Robert', I have to say I, too, thought Hockney's book 'Secret Knowledge' was an enlightening read.  Of course it is just a theory but there are some convincing arguments in there......and given that everything seems to get smaller as time progresses, a room sized iPad equivalent doesn't seem that outlandish for the 16th century.

Agreed (although I've crossed swords with RJ on this before) To those who haven't read it, here is a detailed review.  Martin Kemp was very interested. The lengthy correspondence between Kemp & Hockney is a fascinating read.    https://letteraturaartistica.blogspot.com/2016/06/david-hockney17.html
I prefer Andrew Roles method, even though I have an I pad (reconditioned) with a grid app.  By using the acetate sheet over a print, I don’t have to worry about getting paint on it and I can put it right next to my final picture.  I have a tablet holder on my easel, but am always bumping in to it.
I have a Samsung Galaxy on a gooseneck holder with a clamp that goes on my easel.

Collette, could you recommend the brand of gooseneck holder you have? I’ve been looking at a few online but am put off by some of the reviews. Thank you
I'm not sure you need an iPad or similar to superimpose a grid of lines on a photo. You could just buy some tracing paper, attach it to the photo with masking tape, draw the grid and then trace the important features with a biro or pencil.

I do need an iPad to refer to images on there if I don't have the original photograph. This is for mural painting, the thread title is misleading, sorry.
It seems that you have a digital copy of the photograph but don’t have an iPad. Provided you have access to a laptop and a printer you can print a paper copy of the photo. Then add a sheet of tracing  paper on top of the photo, add a grid and trace the photo.
