Hello. I wonder if anybody could help me identify who this artist is. My grandfather passed away. And he had this painting. If anybody recognizes the signature. That would be a great help. As I can't seem to find anything online. And I can't make out what the signature says. Thank you for taking the time to read this post.
Why is it always the case that half the blasted signature is unreadable?  Every time.... it looks to me like Rea Pear... something.  Pearce? Pearson? Peart?  It's an original watercolour, so far as I can see: and a lesson to all of us to ask our parents and grandparents where their collected paintings came from, before it's too late.  If I find anything, I'll post again.
Well, posting again anyway - I've found nothing, having tried every variant I can on names beginning with Pear - I admit I haven't tried Pearmain, but I think that would have popped up if such an artist existed.  You could try Googling all day, and never find an artist who lived before the internet and perhaps wasn't very well known in their own time: try Pearmain, Pearlman, anything you can think of.... but I can only wish you luck with it.  The style of dress of the figures is Edwardian/late Victorian - but that's no guarantee that the picture was painted back then.  The back might give you a clue as to its age: it does seem rather well preserved, under its glass: if that's a crack in the top right, it needs to be re-glazed, to protect it.  The building, presumably, is Brighton Pavilion - maybe a clue there: artist living in Brighton?  But then again - that could be another trip down the rabbit burrow.
As a long shot, I think it might be Rod Pearce. https://www.islandfinearts.com/artists/20/rod-pearce

Well done indeed! This particular painting looks far less accomplished than the one posted by the author of this thread - I would never have linked the two as the same artist!
I had to look up his work. Born in 1942 so the first painting was not Edwardian or Victorian. Very interesting….some of his paintings are lovely, particularly the ones of Venice. Chelsea School of Art.
I’ve just looked him up some excellent paintings, the first thing that came up was a gallery on the Isle of White selling his paintings. I will, put him on the list if someone wants to do the introduction, or as a bonus artist ?.
Would there be a problem with permission ?
Might well be a permission problem, yes, given these are in a gallery; but in any event, if I were the type to bet, I'd bet the painting shown isn't by Rod Pearce - I'd like to take a closer look at his signature, though.  The blurb says he also works in watercolour, but all those shown on the islandfinearts website are oil.   Whoever it is, I wish they'd taken as much trouble with the rest of the signature as they took with their 'R's....
And there it is right in front of me!  Yes, that watercolour is the same signature: well done, Norette, you've found our man!  Well done Colette too, because that signature proves it....
https://www.riversidegallery.co.uk/product-category/artists/rod-pearce/ Another gallery which shows his work: and some more information about him.   The annoying thing is - I've seen his work before!  I will say though that the 'period' painting Gavin Ince has isn't very typical of his work.  I hope he won't mind I thought his name was Rea - I must have been thinking of the US actor, Rhea Perlmann....
