Having a trip out to Shrewsbury recently i came across a lovely little picture of a thatched roof cottage very small not sure of age or the artist his name is clearly signed in pencil William J Phillips on the reverse it has a label for the framers
they are Ar Skillen & Co 17 Lambs Conduit Street Bloomsbury Guess London. Would love to get an idea of the age please thanks, Seems a pretty little thing with black possibly ebonized wooden frame i am quite taken with it myself so feel the £3 asking price even though the actual picture is just 5 3/4" x 3 1/8" sitting in a larger frame seems good to me for what it is. Thank you .

I don’t know anything about the artist but it looks a nice piece, the most important thing is you like it and at £3 it worth buying . Good luck in finding out more about the artist m we have a couple of forum members who are very good a discovering artists hope they can help . It’s probably an amateur artist who isn’t known but that doesn’t matter one bit .

Impossible to put a date on it unfortunately.
Difficult to tell from the photos, but it does look as though it could be an etching.
If there is an indentation in the paper, around the image, caused by the pressure on the plate, then it is an etching which are quite desirable.
Either way, for £3 you’ve done well…

Unusual to find this much useful information on the back of a picture - I wish they were all that helpful. There's a print/engraving for which they're asking £35.00 on Ebay, as well. Phillips was working in the latter end of the 19th century, it seems. You've got a bargain for your £3.00: the one on Ebay is easily worth its money, too.

Thank you for such a quick & informative reply i am stunned how some people are able to do sleuthing on matters of attribution so well.
My original thought had been it may be a 30's pencil drawing but it does have a line around so i take it that it may well be an etching this and the
date range makes me really happy as it is a true antique :)
I am a glass collector and and many of the forums do not have the exuberance and free spirited conversations i have found here thanks

Yes indeed, I second that! good to get some feedback for our efforts!
Just to add, a line alone doesn’t indicate that it’s an etching. It needs to be an indentation in the paper, usually quite pronounced, it occurs on all etchings, it’s where the original printing plate(which has the image engraved on it and loaded with ink), is pressed into the damp paper by the etching press… this has heavy steel rollers that the plate and inked paper pass through!
Good find anyway, pencil drawing or etching, either are nice to have.
