I am interested in collecting old copies of The Artist magazine, I believe the first editions were in the early 30s? I have seen some on a popular online auction site but they appear to be US publications, they have a very generic cover which just says "The Artist"and they're priced in US cents.  I'm assuming this was a totally different publication to the English magazine that we're all familiar with? Any other information on back issues greatly appreciated.
Yes, The Artist magazine celebrated its 90th year of publication in 2021. They have lots of back issues available to purchase, but it’s unlikely that they’ll go back that far. The online editor, Dawn Farley will be back on the 4th, I expect that she’ll read this and point you in the right direction -
The US magazine - don't know if it still exists - was/is indeed different.
I uploaded a page turner of the first ever issue to celebrate the 90th anniversary last year - you can find it here https://www.painters-online.co.uk/the-artist-march-1931 You do find the magazines for sale on Ebay and places from time to time, but our back issues for sale don't go back very far I'm afraid. We have a complete collection for our records of course.
How about digitising the whole collection!? 😃. One at a time, of course.
What a delight to see this old magazine.  The drawings and paintings look great, and all those lovely old adverts.
Fabulous to see this first edition, the typefaces intrigue me as does the layout - how things have changed! The design (or typeface) used for the Masthead is certainly unusual and the front cover in general leaves something to be desired! - it’s blank… Thanks for sharing that with us Dawn.
The earliest covers were pretty boring it has to be said! They got more interesting over the years though. We have looked into the possibility of having all the catalogue of back issues digitally scanned in the past - you never know!
One cover from each decade as scanned for an e-newsletter last year!
I've been saving articles from the archives to our Studio Wall here https://www.painters-online.co.uk/studio-wall/painters-onlinet/1261/ Some of them may be of interest!
Thanks for all these Dawn, some great articles of interest to me amongst that batch!
My goodness, there’s a lot to choose from there, Dawn!
