Hedgehog, Mike, Fiona and Robin you have posted delightful individual work.
I find it quite amazing when artists are given a subject to paint and so many variations are produced. I too like Fiona's monochrome work, I agree with your comment, Alan.
By the way, just like to add from an earlier post in this thread- I just can't imaging any of your work being rubbish, Alan.
I'm having a go at this tonight.

Here's mine it's not the best, but I didn't really feel inspired by it. It took less than an hour from start to finish and that was Inc a bit of drying between washes too. I agree that it should be a verbal challenge or just a sketch maybe that we can then copy and put our own stamp on. I think once you have been shown something you can't get the idea of the original out of your head and it's hard to change it. On the plus side it got me doing a bit.

The first I saw of this was Fiona's lovely ink version on the Forum which inspired me to hunt out this Challenge and have a look at the thread and the lovely varied responses (I had seen the original post re possible challenges but had not been checking to see if they had started). Here are my attempts - have done 2 on one piece of paper (the last sheet of an old cheap 140 lb watercolour pad). The top one was supposed to be a pure watercolour but had to rescue it with pen. The lower one was a pen drawing with wash added. Both are pretty quick - good fun to do and a nice distraction from clearing files of my laptop.

Jen, that's a lovely clean piece of work, add a bit of glitter and it would make a lovely Christmas card, or even little gift tags.
Great snowy effects with both paintings maggyn, the bottom painting is appealing to me, I like the sunlit shapes within the trees and across the foreground. Nice work.

Well got the paints out and here's my version, replaced the log cabin for the houses, gouache, pen and ink, painted loose and quick in half an hour. 6 x 8 cheap 140grm textured paper from Wilko, but it holds the colour well and washes seem to blend nice, won't be selling it so good enough for the challenge lol !!!. I got pulled away by other duties - so haven't tried it yet.
But I think that the way to tackle this is to ignore the original, and do your own thing.
But I still - sorry, Dawn n'all! - want a bit more of a challenge than this; because if it had been more interesting, and better painted to be quite if cruelly frank, I'd have had a crack at it by now.
How many cabins in the snow are you going to find in this country, to start with.....? A tractor in the snow .... a combine harvester in the snow .... a pheasant, hiding from the guns, a fox lurking out of the way of the hunt, in the snow or anywhere else, an abandoned house, a fallen tree in a field, sheep huddling against the weather - any of those would have been infinitely more interesting than a hackneyed image.
I know, nasty, horrible old man, making this worse as he runs on ..... sorry. But it's dull: my life is dull enough: I don't want to represent that in paint........
All right, I'll go away now then; spoilsport .... wet blanket ..... grouch..... Oh, I'm used to all of those words, fire away at me....

Hourah, I finally finished it!! I made the drawing with an Artline 0,8 marker and couldn't decide what to do next: colour or not? Today I decided to look for a compromise: Quink Ink. I love the colour changes when it dries, turning on the yellowish side here and there. Problem: I am not completely pleased with the trees on the right hand side: should I darken them like the ones behind the cabin or not? All comments are always very, very welcome and a Merry Christmas to you all :) Mia
