This morning I looked through the last 10 pages in the gallery. There are some great works by some very talented artists at all levels of development and I wouldn't wish to take this away from anyone, but a few really stood out for me and demanded a closer look. With this in mind it struck me that it would be interesting to post a list of those that really appealed to me and to invite others to do the same - possibly on a regular weekly basis. However, here on POL we are all equals and I wondered if this would be such a good idea - singling out works of merit, even though everyone's taste is different, could be a bit divisive - or could it? Just a thought - what do others think?
It might possibly discourage new posters and those with less confidence in that they could view it as a 'league table' of gallery entries. Personally I like the range of work in the gallery and have my own favourites but regularly find myself viewing a 'one off' or something completely different to my usual taste.
Back to the "subjective" Michael. Personally I wouldn't want to do it or be judged . It could even put people off posting their paintings . I think the gallery works well as it is. The works across the top are I suppose a bit "selective" . Never quite sure what criteria is used for those.
I remember on the old system when most viewed was a feature which I quite liked but recognise that the idea of being 'judged' was probably a bit off-putting for many. Think you've both convinced me !!
It would depend on how you did it; and the system itself tends to do this - the range at the top of the page includes those that have particularly stood out for the web manager, combined, as she cheerfully admits, with a certain amount of jiggery-pokery convenience - the format within which she has to work influences the choices made, for reasons of proportion: so it doesn't mean that there's some league table of merit; these are just the paintings that caught Dawn's eye, and that she could fit into the format. It's always rather nice to be up there, though.. My point, obscurely made (well, it was a heavy night last night), is that it's fine to point out your pick of the day or week, so long as you're not saying anything that could be interpreted as "these are the best"; which I know you wouldn't do. I've done it from time to time - I've popped onto the forum to direct people's eye to work by Rupert Cordeux, Pratim Das, and the Russian gentleman who was doing his level best to sell his late dad's pictures, plus probably a few others: I didn't claim they were the best, but wanted to share what I'd loved about them with anyone who might have missed them - knowing how very easy it is to miss pictures because they get edged to one side so fast. Don't be put off! You don't need to make a regular thing of it, but an occasional "do look at this!" might help people find something they would otherwise have missed; and if they don't happen to share your taste, well no harm is done. http://www.isleofwightlandscapes.net http://www.wightpaint.blogspot.co.uk
As a 'newby' I wouldn't like to judge or be judged. I am always delighted to have comments and advice on my paintings, it's so encouraging to me. Yes, there are certain people I always comment on because I love their work but also comment on other paintings I find are to my taste. There are some superb artists who, I notice, don't receive any comments which I find rather sad. I know we cannot comment on every painting as time prevents this. I feel the gallery works well, as the saying goes 'if it 'aint broke don't fix it'.
I agree that there are some excellent artists who get few comments but that is often because they neither comment on others nor acknowledge comments against their own work.
As a comparitive newcomer here I'm really delighted with the site as is. Lots of encouraging comments and, if adverse then take it on the chin and pass on. The main thing for me is the way no one is better than anyone else and it's hardly one-upmanship as works tend to come and go on the gallery faster than paint takes to dry. Seeing the fantastic range of styles and skill levels just shows what a wonderful thing art is. Also, a quick sketch can create as much interest as a complex work. I'm just glad I found this place..(-: Jim.

I agree with Robert (creep, creep...) that it is helpful to point others towards work which you enjoy but which seems to be escaping attention. But I freely admit that I now avoid placing comments on the work of one watercolourist in particular, whose work I admire, because my comments are obviously of no importance or interest to him. Indeed I asked in one post why he never responded. But without looking it up now (an almost impossible task) I cannot remember exactly what his reply was, but it was hurtful and arrogant, and I pity that great big chip on his shoulder.
I either say in the nicest possible Kenny Everett way or refrain.
There is nought as queer as folk!
Well that's a relief Sylvia, I would expect a ticking off from you if it had been me and quite right too. I did have a sneaking suspicion that it was our Pol friend, I did comment on an abstract some while ago and left it at that. Some of his work appeals to me but most of it is without substance, simple watercolour washes with trees, the sort of thing that you could knock out in about two minutes hence his four a day output, just not my thing but we are all different.
