It's Chinese New Year on Sunday and we have three new Chinese brush painting demos to share, including one from our very own Seok Yam Chew, plus two question-based competitions, offering the chance to win books from Search Press and Chinese brush painting sets from Jackson's Art Supplies. Make sure you take a look! https://www.painters-online.co.uk/competitions/ https://www.painters-online.co.uk/tips-techniques/search/?Search=&TagIds=761
I sure will - but I don't think I'll ever have the delicacy of touch which is so typical of Chinese painters: not so much a technique, more a way of life.
I don't have Chinese brushes but did this yesterday trying to keep to a traditional style. I think I'll be getting some Chinese brushes. I really like the style of traditional Chinese artwork. I think I might have another go today. I normally sketch but this was straight in with the brush.
That’s rather lovely Denise. I worked with a Chinese lady years ago who became a good friend and her husband painted traditional style on a scroll for me. Really skilful.
That’s a great result Denise, positive, direct and confident brush application!
You might have known that, of all of us, Denise would be right in there with brushes poised - well done.
Thanks Tessa, Alan and Robert.  I've definitely decided to buy some Chinese brushes. Here is my painting this afternoon. Very enjoyable doing them.
This is lovely Denise, I have no doubt why you getting those brushes, it seems you having very relaxing time painting!
I can just feel you’re enjoying this Denise. You must investigate a Chinese signature! I know Jim has one ( Jim Morris) - or one that looks like one. You could just sign it with the symbol for “D”
Thanks Pog and Marjorie, that is a wonderful idea, I'll be on to it right away I'm sure.
Beautiful work, Denise. Do be careful when buying Chinese brushes, some are very cheap and the hair falls out, a few hairs fall with the more expensive ones, also, but not as alarmingly. Hmay is a good brand, there are many good brands, a set of s.m.l of the cloud brush would be a good place to start your collection, beware, buying them becomes addictive. Rosemary and co sell a good set, but they don't make them, non the less they are lovely brushes. The book in the comp is a delight to look at it has beautiful images and actual photos with step-by-step instruction. It really is an inspiration. All the best with your Chinese painting adventure. Another book, I found invaluable The Mustard Seed Garden Manual of Painting - translated from the Chinese and edited by Mai-mai Sze.

I lived in Hong Kong as an expat wife some many years ago .  I did a Chinese brush painting class...Ow , I can still feel the rapping of the tutors ruler on my knuckles when I went off in school child mode.  I have a "Chop" Marjorie a name thingy . Not sure what it really says,.it is very disciplined Denise though I think I learned something.   These pages are from a small concertina book I bought out there  ( no not my work)
