I think it would be a good idea if the price of the painting was shown when it is clicked.  Having to 'contact the artist' will raise expectations that a sale is in the offing when maybe we're just curious about the price.  Just a thought.
I totally agree John, and if anyone wants to sell their own work and is unsure about pricing, this will give an idea of what others charge. I’m not in the buying market myself, and haven’t marked any of mine for sale, but I find the fact that there is no price off-putting. Make it clear and simple please! I think work will be more likely to sell if clearly priced.
This question was raised when the new site launched, but the general consensus at the time was that it isn’t necessary. I couldn’t disagree more, potential buyers want to know the price, obvious to me! They don’t want to enter into a negotiating deal without a starting point.
Trouble is - this is neither one thing nor another.  It's as if the site is trying to commercialize itself - but not too much.  There are other sites on which we can list work for sale if we want to - I didn't see any good reason for this site to join them, and seem to remember expressing some misgivings about that when shown a preview.   My view is - if you're going to do this, go the whole hog; and better not to do it at all - granted, I haven't posted much for a while now: but when I do I'm not chasing sales - doesn't mean I'd take offence if you offered me money, of course....  Far, ahem, from it.  But somehow - it doesn't feel right for this site, and it's not a development I like much.
I also find the For Sale aspect off putting.  I just don’t like it .
I agree with the above comments: either add a price or do not have the 'for sale' facility in the first place (my preferred option).
I did suggest earlier that POL simply used a symbol i.e. a green circle if something is for sale which becomes red once it's sold (like a gallery).  Less 'in your face'.  I also agree a price should be given.
I've requested that the facility to add a price is included when work is shown for sale. We will see what can be done!
Do you think that, by putting up the work for sale, people won't be interested in discussing it with other members ( an excellent feature of this site )? Members who have been posting for a while and who do engage in a " conversation" may still do this but I've already noticed that there are quite a few newer participants who put up the "for sale" sign and that's it, not interested in the commenting side. Personally, I would rather this wasn't a selling site and I hope the sense of community continues.
I agree with Marjorie and noticed similar. But however if you owned the website it’s a good move offering a sales point, it attracts customers. In a business it’s customers that you need. But I feel the backbone of this site is the long standing members who make the site interesting. Without it would soon become very sterile. Just my point of view.
I don’t personally believe that it will make much difference Marjorie. The group that tends to comment and interact with other members, both on the gallery as well as the forum will I believe continue to do so, well I hope so, why wouldn’t they! With no commission to pay, and a trivial £25 a year fee, must be an attractive proposition if you do want to sell (or try to sell) your work.
I agree with others’ comments that by adding the ‘for sale’ option it has changed the nature of the site, making it appear more commercial.  I do feel that it’s in danger of losing some of the friendly community spirit that we’ve enjoyed in the past.
