I was looking unsuccessfully for some method of storing board paintings before they were dry. In the end I designed and built one myself.  As it took me some time to work it all out and it has proved very useful and easy to make I thought I'd give details of it. Mine was designed to take 20" × 16" canvas boards or other boards 3 - 6mm thick and also similar but thicker sized framed canvas.  The spacing of the dowels used also allow smaller paintings to be stored. The pictures show the finished article and I'll give sizes I used but these are mainly not critical and you can use what wood is to hand or to suit your size of paintings. As a base I used a bit of spare 25cm x 61cm x 6mm MDF and cut off 9cm for the side which was mounted on two vertical woods 4cm x 35cm simply screwed onto one of the two base supports for  which I used 25cm x 4cm x 6cm pieces. Sizes of the supports are not important, simply something to screw the side uprights to and also allow a useful space underneath. The important bits are the dowels.  I used 6mm x 30mm wood dowels and drilled holes of 6mm at 14mm  centres across the base and smaller side.  Don't drill all the way through, about 2/3rds the thickness will do.  For the base I drilled 22cm from the side and 26cm up from the base.  See pics if not  clear.  Drill everything before screwing together and make sure you measure from the same sides so it all lines up. Don't glue the dowels in, just push fit them.  I used full sized dowels for the side but cut down the dowels to half size for the base. One of the advantages of the design is that as well as holding various sizes of boards, dowels can be removed to allow the storage of thicker framed canvases.  The whole thing can of course be built to suit whatever size you want.  I hope someone finds this useful.

What an excellent idea Steve, I don’t use canvas or oil but I certainly can see the usefulness of it.

This is an excellent idea!  I am really pushed for space and have oils in various stages of drying all over the house at the moment.  I have asked my other half to make me one for canvases.
Such a good idea ... I will get my husband on the case.   BTW I've found an excellent case for carrying my oil boards to and fro painting classes.  www.carriart.co.uk

Excellent idea Steve. I use something based on a similar idea for storing smaller boards which stops them sticking together if still tacky, obviously no use for carrying but has been helpful in the studio. I think they cost me about £2 each from a certain Swedish store!

Gorn, and never called me Mother.

I love the idea that Steve Andrews has and will try to get someone to construct this.  The Swedish store is too far for me to pop in and I have found online that a certain store named Range The or similar (hope it's ok to say this as a hint) has a similar plate rack so this might be convenient.  Btw, currently I have a completed painting on a board inside a cardboard box that came through the post from an online retailer and this free method may appeal if you have one handy .. I shall stack the boxes on a shelf to dry.
