It reminds me of stuff I liked in the 80's when I liked street art and abstract expressionism like Jean-Michel Basquiat and DeKooning(its amazing to think how we change - I love realism now!). I agree the figure drawing is quite good (proportionally) but the painting lacks skill - the colours have a certain harmony to them. I can see why your sister might like it but not my thing anymore. I'd have probably paid £20 for a print in the 80s but not £££ for the real thing!
Thanks, Cat. Love it or dislike it, the artist is telling a story, and an intriguing one.

Well….. it looks like I’m in the minority, apart from Denise, I quite like it, but I’m quite odd in my artwork too. It makes you look, and the fact we’re all commenting on it must say something! I’ve seen similar paintings in up market galleries in Nottingham. It’s certainly a statement, love it or loathe it.

My couple of days away have been scuppered by a heavy cold so I've been following this fascinating discussion. It just goes to show that art is emotional, you connect with it or you don't.  I can appreciate that the figure is correctly proportioned (it is meant to be Audrey Hepburn), but it's so crudely painted and that offends me as an artist. Happily on here we can agree to differ without anyone getting upset! Peter
re your last sentence. Quite right, Peter. I doubt very much it's meant to be Audrey Hepburn. The overall painting does have that fashion and a certain lifestyle look to it. A marmite one, for sure.
Dark glasses are so much easier than painting eyes aren't they!
Could be, but then again, I suppose its all about the look the artist is trying to epitomise.
You're kinder than me Carol!!
I visited my sister in St Cloud near Paris over Christmas and on the wall she has this picture. It's about 2m x 1.5m in size, painted on canvas. I don't know the artist and I don't want to but I don't think it was cheap. My sister thinks it's wonderful. I showed it to a friend from the Melton art group today and she liked it too. I think it's inept! If I'd painted it I wouldn't show anyone or bring it out in daylight. What do you think?  I'm going to be away for a couple of days now and when I get back on Saturday morning I'll ve very interested to read your comments. Peter

Do you have a photo of it in higher resolution? I can't tell what is at the top and in the upper right corner. Is that a newspaper page glued there in a Dadaist fashion?

The more I look at this, the more I’m starting to quite like it - the figure and face are elegantly done - but what rather kills it is that oversized hat.

That's the only picture I've got Lucian, I had to snatch it on my phone when my sister wasn't looking! It is paper glued on, either from a newspaper or magazine or possibly an old Alitalia brochure.  Is that a hat Jenny - I thought it was a bucket!! I had a look online earlier on to see if I could find an original photo that might have been copied but no luck. Peter
Peter, why don’t you just ask your sister about it?
