Because I'm interested in all things art, I'm recording this series and make attempts to watch it...seldom for more than 15 minutes. Perhaps there should be a disclaimer at the end...'no artist was harmed during the recording of this show.' There isn't. Perhaps they can't say this, as unraveling peoples self-confidence seems to be the main activity of the mentors. I'm sure these artists are better than they appear in this show. Several in this thread have championed the spontaneity of quick sketches, I agree with that. I do quick scribbles on scrap paper when I'm making pictures up, I can seldom recreate the liveliness when I do the actual picture. But I don't want to do quick sketchy pictures all the time. I go along with Davey's 'somewhere in between the lively sketch and the laboured work'. That's what I'm after. Not easy.
Here's a quick sketch that took moments to make, it was for a picture about a bunch of old boys playing cards in the shed...the finished image is dead, inert...lacking the character and liveliness of the sketch. (I kept this, I didn't keep the finished picture.)
As for the people in the show, I hope they get something out of it.

Comments that can be ignored as they are just that: Like a few other males, I suspect, I thought Oliver more than a bit vain. That off-the shoulder self portrait didn't gel with me at all. As a self portrait, looking over his shoulder hardly matched the self-portrait criteria. He has some talent, but to make him winner on the strength of one painting was very wrong for me. Anil was the best painter but screwed up badly in the last challenge. His perspective was way out and his painting not at all impressive. His portrait was very good and, in my opinion (for what it's worth) he should have won having consistently done good work. For a final, the class was pretty mundane all round to be honest. None of them showed much imagination in their subjects. To be let loose in a shipyard is a dream scenario and they all seemed nervous and overpowered by it.. Sorry it's over though as it's entertaining enough.
