Thanks for the reminder, will go and record the series. I've recently been watching a few from last year that Sky have been showing again, as they do - exceptional stuff from some of the artists.
I enjoyed watching it and liked two of the three chosen, and as you say Tessa, the entry submission clinched it for the winner; some remarkable likenesses painted in this first programme.
I didn't agree with the judges' choice, I thought the other two finalists were better.
Yes the soft focus portrait was really good, but did she blow it with the right eye - making more of a statement about her style than about the sitter?

Probably the single reason that she didn't get through Tony; It could have benefited from sharpening up a little I agree. I don't mind, in fact I expect an artist to put their own stamp on their work, but in this case it was her downfall.
It is a shame I don't have Sky!
Just watched this weeks episode… Well the Spanish girl was a clear winner for me! Vibrant and exciting mixed media drawing (or was it just pastel?) Her mixed media submission was also quite a stunning self portrait! Well done the judges.
I too agreed with the judges for a change, the Spanish girl really captured her subject so well. My hubby watching as well said "look at her hands, they are filthy", I reminded him that's why I don't like pastels😀😀
Episode 3 I thought Libby Fellingham's knife work was superior in every respect, and I was amazed when she didn't win. Some of the finished pieces left me baffled. The winner's painting was good but nothing to write home about, at least it didn't do much for me, emotionally speaking. Libby's really hit the mark, though. But! Who am I Bri

Just watched it, and I also agree that the art teacher's expressive portrait, coupled with his submission, was a worthy winner. I did however really like the lady who used the painting knife throughout, although she didn't make the top three. Probably didn't have that completed look, more of a rapid preliminary sketch. I'm always disappointed when I see artist's using pictures from their phones to work from. Absolutely not what I would want to see or expect in a competition. Quite a few adopted this method of working this week. Tessa has summed that one up nicely with her statement!
Yip! Totally agree with this weeks winning choice, and as Alan said I thought the lady with the knife was very good indeed. Perhaps her early finish put the judges off, because she claimed she didn't want to spoil the work by overworking it, even though there was clearly room for a nudge here and there. It looked like, and sounded like, she couldn't be bothered. However, I'm also of a mind that she was edited to look a bit cocky. One of her comments to the sitter sounded very abrupt, yet I fancy the rest of her reply was carefully removed. I hope I'm wrong. Just my impression. Bri
