Hello everyone! Has anyone tried shipping art (from the UK) to the US? I'm trying very hard to find a rough estimate of the customs duty on the recipient's end if the value of the artwork (which will be reflected in the customs declaration) is about £300-400. Despite my best efforts researching this, there's a lot of conflicting info about US customs duty online for art. Some sources say, yes there'd be a custom charge of £80 or more for art of that value; other sources saying there won't be a customs charge/any tax unless your declared value of the shipping item above £800. Keen to hear from fellow artists or anyone who's had experience shipping art to the US: did your recipient incur some tax/customs duty for works of £300 or more? Thank you in advance for your help! (Edited for clarity)

I’ve not shipped any artwork to the USA this year, but did so last year, all around similar pricing to yours.  I’m not aware of any customs duty that was paid in the US by the recipients, they would surely have mentioned it. I’m pretty certain that there won’t be. However, goods being sent to the UK may incur taxes. I was interested in purchasing the Open Box M pochade box from the manufacturer, value $500 or so. I was told that it would incur tax but that would have to be paid at customs, how much was unknown. I didn’t proceed, too risky.
Yes, tax does have to be paid if importing from the USA.  I've ordered a couple of things recently.  Simple process to pay and it's not too bad.   Given that the price in $ is often cheaper than £ it sort of works itself out.   BTW I bought a John  Pike Universal Big Well Palette for $55 inc postage  (duty was then £10.34) from John Pike art Products.  So all up about £55.00.  Fabulous palette with cover for oils and acrylic (previously only for watercolour) with good 2inch wells. Great for travelling.  The website is: www.johnpikeart.com
I imported an Open Box M with a bag and wet board carrier from the manufacturer last year.  Total price was $377 including $64 shipping.  On arrival in the uk I had to pay a further £76.22 in taxes made up of £9.29 customs duty, £54.93 import VAT and £12 Clearance fee. Well worth the expense and hassle though.
Oh right, thank you Alan, that’s clarified that for me. Unfortunately, they aren’t currently shipping anything outside of the USA, that will change later I expect. Update: Just checked and they are about to resume delivery to U.K.  incidentally Alan, which size did you buy, I’m thinking of the 12x16in. I’ve already got the same Manfrotto tripod that they recommend.

Hi Alan, I bought the 14” x 11” size as I rarely paint any bigger than that outside (perhaps I should).  However because the holding bars are able to extend beyond the overall dimensions of the box it could take a  bigger board. Mine extends by 2.25” each side which means I could use a board up to about 18” across but stability might be a problem at that size.  I’ve never tried though so please check online. The box is a pleasure to use I only wish I had ordered the brush holder and side hook accessories as well! I use the Manfrotto tripod I already had for my camera. Alan

Thanks for mentioning those Alan, I’ve just found them and certainly look useful add-ons. I find it difficult to paint small scale, just my ‘gung-ho’ rough style I suppose. As soon as they start shipping again, I’ll place an order - although as things stand now, I won’t be going far with it!
I sent 9 paintings to the USA last year and my experience was the same as Alans and similiar price ranges. I received payment before shipping them and if there was any tax to pay it was up to the recipient to declare although I am unaware of any.
Thanks Alan and Michael! That's very comforting to hear! I'm new to selling my art so am delighted to have found this UK-based online community :)
You’re welcome Jane, and good luck with the sales! The bulk of my sales (and it can hardly be classed as bulk) come from my membership with Artfinder online. They seem to have a good following in the states. Why not join in the gallery section, post your work and get encouraging comments - well sometimes!
Thanks, Alan - I'll look into it!
