I've just watched a piece on the BBC news about Rose Wylie. Someone put me out of my misery - what am I not seeing?!
Dunno, boy!   I shall have to take a look...... I've sort of heard of the name, and sort of not (isn't that helpful?).   Give me a few hours....
Ah; yes; I'd forgotten her work, which I can't imagine was entirely accidental.  I don't want to savage a 91 year old, and indeed - since I don't really understand what she's trying to do - or succeeding in doing - I'm not qualified to criticize.  I think this is work you either get or - don't.  I'm afraid I don't.  I can't pretend to understand it, or see any virtue in it.  The best thing I can say is - each to their own; and this isn't mine.
Glad it's not just me Robert!
There's a piece in the Guardian about her - I can salute anyone who keeps working into her 90s,  but .... well; I can see the  fun element, the interplay of ideas; I just think it could be done so much better. Which probably plops me right into the philistine category, but there we are: I'm just wholly out of sympathy with her work - wholly?  Well - nearly wholly.   I'm confident we wouldn't get on: and that's probably the only problem - the conservative vs the radical; the whimsical vs the over-logical. Maybe.
Just come online and of course I had to look her up. Must say that I agree with both of you, I don't get it either, and quite frankly am not going to pretend I like it. However, as Robert says, each to their own. And I'm all for doing what you like into your 90s.
Well looks like I’m in good company then , it’s great that she is painting and enjoying it as well after that no further comment,  my ten year old granddaughter said ohhh I can do better than that and she certainly can .
Her age shouldn't matter, it's the quality of work that counts and nothing else.
Ditto here. I suppose modern art is all about the message.  But then that takes me to the realm of the political cartoonists.  I much prefer a message from, say, Martin Rowson, of the Guardian who adds some artistic flair, certainly hard work, and often references a previous work - be it a Gilray or a Holman Hunt etc.
Peter, I can see the steam coming out of your ears!! We also saw this and we’re baffled, having never heard of her, but presumably there are people out there who actually like her work. Incidentally for anyone interested there is a programme on BBC2 this evening at 9pm- LS Lowry: The Unheard Tapes. Maybe more our cup of tea!
