I have done it, but on the whole wouldn't - that is, I wouldn't paint over an old painting, normally, but of course, yes, painting a newer and, we hope, better version is probably something many of us do.
Sometimes - rarely - I look at an old painting of mine and think: d'you know, laddie; that's not at all bad! In those cases - which are, as said, rare - I probably wouldn't try another painting of the same scene, for fear of just copying myself. Still, my favourite painter, Corot, did - again and again: there are more Souvenirs d'Italie than there are postcards of the Trevi Fountain, it sometimes seems: of course there aren't, but he did paint a lot of them.
