Doing chores over the weekend I came across a painting I did about two years ago. Now I have that extra painting experience, I thought, the ship is so out of proportion. So, on Sunday, as I've had bad hey fever for four weeks, I took the opportunity to take breaks and rework the painting inbetween doing the front garden. I enlarged the ship, worked on the sails and tried to give them a bit more definition and I also did a bit of work on the sea. I didn't want to waste too much time on it but I think it has improved with the changes. I might revisit a couple more oldies whilst doing chores. Do you have any reworked paintings a before and after photo. Here are mine.
You've done an excellent job Denise.  I frequently go back to old pictures, especially portraits as I'm never happy with them.  I posted the one on the right this morning, it's been through several versions since the original on the left: It's still not perfect but it will do for the moment.
Oh yes, that is much improved Peter, it is something I rarely do but I've spotted a couple that might be worth spending a couple of extra hours on.
I take the view that you've nothing to lose, you can't make it worse and might make it better!   Robert kindly pointed me in the right direction with this picture so I've gone back to it again; new version on the right.  POL is brilliant for giving you the shove you need sometimes to improve.  Sorry to hijack your thread Denise, I'll keep quiet now.

That's why I put it on Peter, so people could discuss it. I wondered how many people, say, after a few months or even years took a second look and could clearly see things wrong on the first attempt.

Decidedly a triumph of re-work Denise. The whole thing is far better and you're so right about definition in the sails. Great work.
Denise, it’s got more light now and is “ freer” but the original is certainly fine. Sometimes I look at oldies and cringe, sometimes I think “ hey, that’s not so bad!”
Just for a laugh….the original on the canvas and the the view painted on top. Improvement?
I like them both Marjorie.
Well it’s more to my liking Marjorie, I’m not a flower person but I love that seascape! I rarely, if ever, return to a painting… I much prefer to just move on with a new project!
Marjorie, I like both of your paintings, I don't think I would have painted over the flowers. I must admit, I usually like to move onto a new project but glad I spent a couple of hours on this.

I often go back to an old painting and rework it.  This first one (an old photo, not very good) always seemed to lack something, so I removed the (photo)collaged robin and butterfly and replaced it with a blackbird cut from a failed watercolour, and added a bit of collaged colour in the bottom corner. Denise, think both your ship paintings work well, although do like the light in the second one.   Also like both of yours, Marjorie, although probably prefer the vibrant colours in the updated version.
