Does anyone know how many members POL has? Looking at the gallery most pictures get two or three comments, maybe one like, and if any get to double figures it's time to put the flags out.  I have no idea how many people are members but if it's a lot they clearly either don't look at the gallery or simply don't like the pictures (and it's not just mine!) It just strikes me as a shame that so much lovely work seems to be so little appreciated.
Peter I have no idea as to how many people are registered on the site . Quite a lot of people post their work take the comments but never post a comment on other people work , they can’t dislike everything , so it appears to me that they either don’t look or just don’t bother posting comments. Not a lot we can do about it , I have personal stopped put comments on some peoples work as I have noticed they don’t respond or post on anyone else’s artwork, I hasten to add that I’m not talking about my work only . I have deliberately looked at work to see if they have contributed anything to anyone else and regret to say that they don’t . Takes  all sorts I suppose and some  are only interested in their own posts  again not alway enough to  give a simple thanks folks . We cannot compel them to respond or post just accept that they might be simply  ill - mannered.
Agree with Paul’s comments.  Also, a good indication of whether a painting has generated much interest is to look at the number of views it gets on the gallery.  Even if people don’t take the time to comment, at least you know they’ve been interested enough to take a closer look and maybe read any notes the artist may have posted with it.

I dont often go to the gallery, I'm afraid, and even less do I make a comment. Looking just now there are upwards of 25 pieces. I just don't have the tine to have a good look at each one and make a *relevant* comment.  I'm not in favour of saying 'very good', or 'very nice' etc 25 times without sounding trite. And then to pick out one for comment whilst ignoring the others doesn't seem fair either. Sorry about that.

It’s possibly more the case that people don’t know what to say or how. This being a visual arts forum the members may be more inclined to look than comment. I find it’s  much the same on all sites, unless you make a controversial statement then it’s all on. I’d personally like to see more discussions than feel good comments, even though I like to see them myself.  All in all it’s not a bad site.
It’s it a good site even with the odd glitch now and then certainly better than some sites . I don’t think it’s necessary to use technical language or say anything artsy , I only comment on paintings I like no matter who the artist is and avoid where possible the ohh that’s nice comment. There is always something in a painting that I like that stands out for me , it might be a tree , the  way the colours blend or how something is drawn etc that’s what I try to bring into the comments I made . As to people not posting on others work that is their choice I just brought it up as an observation,  it rude I’m my opinion if they just don’t or worse don’t bother looking ,old fashioned view maybe, always being told I’m old fashioned. What I do think is not polite is failing to acknowledge people’s commitments , we all like to have our work praised and appreciated despite saying it doesn’t bother us , a simply Thank you for the comment goes a long way and we appreciate the acknowledgment. I don’t think people feel comfortable analysing another person’s work on the gallery as most post to let the work be seen if someone want critique then the best place is on the forum where there is the appropriate setting for longer discussion, twigs move down  the gallery to quickly to be found easily .
I visit the gallery every day and look at every painting, some more intently than others. I will comment on those I like and find interesting, often leaving a 'trite' comment to simply  let the artist know that I have viewed the piece and that I appreciate the effort made. POL is a site primarily for amateur painters and I don't think a detailed critique would be appropriate nor would I feel qualified in offering one. I have certainly appreciated and valued every comment I've ever received and not acknowledging them as Paul has said, is impolite.
In resent years POL have encouraged more so in their Magazines uploading on the website. However it does not seem to have enlarged the community and as the old story goes. So much is owned to so few. Without a community the site is lifeless. So i am grateful to all who are regular contributors and part of the POL community. For me it seems that those who are part of the community largely do the commenting. Please correct me if I a wrong. However as soon as you upload an image you get a host of views. Well thats the internet for you.

From its outset, when the forum was dominated by Sylvia Evans, Diana Hudson (aka Norder), and Phil Kendall, it's always been  a bit of an exclusive reserve - I really don't  think that's a problem; the basic complement changes, but the  forum trundles on: and  I think  a lot  of people do look in, without necessarily wanting to contribute.  I've encountered quite a few people who say "saw you on POL the other day...."; I wish they would join in, because it does get a bit tedious seeing one's own name so often ... but not everyone really wants to, as it were, expose themselves.  It's a bit surprising that in these days of massive social media involvement, few people want to contribute - but I suspect that's due to lack of confidence.  But come on  - make your point; true, someone like me will then speed in to say that "that's not quite right", but so what?  We live and learn: and anyway - whisper this only to your closest friends, but - shhh - I'm not always right...
Robert I don't mean to be rude but I think you are talking about the wrong subject, as its  about commenting although what you have said is valid, so I better shut up.😜

I agree. If something stands out for me I do refer to it, but sometimes I just have to go for a "trite" comment which at least lets the artist know that their work has been appreciated. I don't get on the site every day though. As you say, this is primarily a site for amateur painters. I always make a point of acknowledging comments, and tend to comment more on those artists who do acknowledge.
