I visit the gallery every day and look at every painting, some more intently than others. I will comment on those I like and find interesting, often leaving a 'trite' comment to simply  let the artist know that I have viewed the piece and that I appreciate the effort made. POL is a site primarily for amateur painters and I don't think a detailed critique would be appropriate nor would I feel qualified in offering one. I have certainly appreciated and valued every comment I've ever received and not acknowledging them as Paul has said, is impolite.

I agree with Russell, the Gallery is surely the place for looking at and expressing appreciation of work posted there.  There is after all a place on the Forum to post paintings if you want a critique of your work.
I visit the gallery as much as I can and comment on as many pictures I find appealing. I'm grateful for any comments received. I like to get feedback on composition, colour, technique, in fact anything that helps me do better but it's rare. However looking at my stats, since 2021 when I joined, I've had 96428 views of my 187 postings which means an average of 515 views each and this is more than they would ever receive hung on the wall of my local pub. I think the site is a great vehicle for exposing your art to a wider audience.  Of my last ten postings of proper paintings (not sketches) I've averaged over 8 comments per picture (which is probably about 5 after 'thank-yous' ) so I'm more than happy with that level of feedback. It's always tough when nobody comments on something you've worked hard on, but all that is saying is that beauty is in the eye of the beholder (not necessarily the artist). I'm not saying this to blow my own trumpet as I paint because I love the process not the praise.
