Is there a best way to package a finished painting that has a mount but not framed in order to arrive undamaged? What do you use and do you add any extra inserts etc to protect it?  Any advice from those of you who do this regularly would be gratefully received.
I have done it in the past successfully Christine, sandwiched between hardboard and lots of bubble wrap and a lot of anxiety!
Same as Katy, I put mine in a plastic sleeve or wrap the mounted painting in tissue paper to keep everything clean - then a good thick cardboard sandwich!
Same here, backing board at back of painting, plastic sleeve, then between two pieces of cardboard, saved from boxes ect. then wrapped in brown paper. Not sold an oil painting as yet so that will be totally different I expect !!
Thank you all for that advice. Obviously a framed piece is more sturdy. I do keep cardboard that art supplies come in, but just wondered if anyone used any ready made packaging. After taking the time to finish and complete a piece of work,  nobody wants it damaged in transit!
I regularly send mounted but unframed work to the States and, like Katy, I sandwich them between hardboard. I also use tissue paper, plastic sleeves and bubble wrap to keep them clean and dry - it's not unknow for packages to arrive wet with rain. Never had a problem with damage - only problem so far is when I've got the ZIP code wrong. I'll shortly be sending two works to Canada and will use the same method.
I use Defendapack art boxes for bigger oil paintings, they’re excellent. Obviously scrap brown paper packaging and bubble wrap for added protection around the framed painting.
