The forum seems to have a hit the doldrums so how about a bit of fun leading up to Christmas. We must all have come across sayings/epithets/phrases/idioms (call them what you will) in our world of art which we find annoying. I will start the ball rolling with one of mine and it will be great if others can join in – just one per day is all it will take to keep us going to Christmas .Here’s my first well quoted offering: My 5 year old could do better than that (the old chestnut – it makes me want to cringe and who is this horrible precocious annoying little 5year old anyway? And why doesn’t she[or he] ? )
En plein air. It’s bloody painting outside. Grrrrrrrrrr.
'There was a young art critic from Tring, But praise just wasn't her thing, She was so full of bile, Her critiques lacked all style, So she was sent home with her nose in a sling.' Sorry about that, (almost in the theme), I just dislike people who equate 'critique' with 'rubbishing'. Lew.
Exploring, questioning, en plein air, and misunderstanding what a critique is all about - yup - they're all on my list
"Painterly"? particularly as its meaning is not readily apparent
No offense to the "realistic" painters, but I hate it when people say about my work: "It just looks like a photograph...". It is not meant to be, it is a PAINTING or DRAWING!!! http://www.painters-online.co.uk/artist/MiaKetels
No problem with plein air, composition or painterly but I grind my teeth when someone says they have 'been on a journey' with their painting. On British Rail or Virgin whatever? It's used outside art of course but always has the same effect on me.
Yes the whole art world uses 'en plein air' but it is pretty pretentious isn't it - bit like a personalised number plate (I gave mine up some time ago) or gateaux when we mean cake. I have been using en plein air myself but giving it more thought I think I'll say 'outside' in future.
'That's a bit like paint by numbers isn't it?' Always raises a smile, that one :)
There sure is a lot of nonsense talked about art. I think the nonsense of limericks counterbalances the nonsense of 'art-speak.' So forgive me...here's another one (I promise it's the last)..... A discussion was held on the forum, with all it's usual decorum. On critics and their cant, we felt no need to rant, for it's generally best to ignore 'em. Goodnight all, I'm closing down for the night. Lew.
Love this, great limericks, given me a laugh on a grey, wet, stressful morning. Can't match them I'm afraid but do agree with your posts. Personally I skip bios written in the third person. I know how you feel about the annoying five year old and now have a reply courtesy of Michael. Something that does annoy me (and your en plein air would qualify) is the use of usually mispronounced French instead of English (esp. lingerie for underwear and faux for false). Great to see the Forum has come back to life.
