I get fidgety easily and don’t concentrate for long one unfortunate effort this has on my artwork is that I soon loose interest in the thing I’m doing. So having more than one painting on the go enables me to move between then , of course it doesn’t always work out but for the majority of time it certainly helps. When I come back to a painting I feel more focused and work on it and more relaxed, I sometimes have four or five paintings in different stages of development and then still set up others to follow on . The down side is that it sometimes takes me longer to finish a particular piece. These are some of my in progress pieces.

I’ve tried this in the past, but it didn’t work for me.  Too many never got finished, and I’d end up painting something on the back.  On occasion, I’ll take a break from a bigger image and do a little 6 x 4 inch picture.  Whatever works for you is best. I particularly like the first two and hope you finish them all.
I too hope you finish them all, Paul. I'm sure you will. There are times when I am unsure whether my painting is complete, so I don't look at it for a few days... then look again with fresh eyes and it usually speaks to me and tells me whether it is. An advantage of your more-than-one approach has surely got to be that you benefit from seeing them with (relatively) fresh eyes at various stages of progress? And this informs the progress?
I have a couple of largish paintings started some time ago (last year), but I haven’t  got back to as yet. I’ve only painted two pictures this year (in my usual acrylics). Done a few doodling things, but just haven’t had the oomph to get the paints out for many months..

Helen I hope you find the drive to pick up your work or start more soon.
Helen - I thought we hadn't seen your work for a while, but your 'doodling thing' in the gallery is an intriguing, lovely work. Maybe develop the doodly things?
I find it is a good idea to have more than one going at a time, otherwise I get too emotionally invested in one.  When things start to go wrong in a painting it is best to do a different one and then return with fresh eyes.
Linda , that’s exactly why I do more than one , tend to look at each with fresh eyes .
I've been ultra busy for a few weeks with non painting stuff.  So it means the only painting I'm doing is at our Friday art group.   I am very slow (it's taken me a while to realise this!) I blamed it on using oils.  But since our new season of group meetings started in September, I've switched back to watercolour....and I'm still slow!  Where eveyone else is finished in our 2+ hour session, I'm less than halfway through.  Each week..a new subject.  So I have about 10 unfinished symphonies over the last year or so Never mind. I'm sure I'll pick up one or two for completion.
We're all different Norrette, I get my leg pulled because I paint so quickly. It's interesting how differently we all approach basically doing the same thing; if I've got an unfinished picture I have to get on with it, I can't leave it alone yet other people come to art group with the picture they were doing the week before, taken home and not touched again. That would drive me nuts!  I suppose as long as we end up with something we like it doesn't really matter what the process of getting there was.
Each to their own as they say , a friend of mine will sit down to paint and won’t do anything else until it’s completely finished. I’ve not had any time to paint this week not  the day time anyway have done a few bits of a sketches etc , in addition to these I have a commission on the go well four of the same scene for a music room The Four seasons. Did manage to get twenty minutes on this one just now. Hope to get back to it later and tomorrow, next stage is the rigging and the bit in worried about the figures at the canteen .
Do the figures next Paul, then they are done and you can stop worrying about them. The longer you leave them the worse it gets and when they are finished you can sit back and think 'I don't know what I was worried about, they look fine'!
