Anyone watching the new series on sky arts? It started last Tuesday. I really think the judges have listened this year to everyones critique of them, as they went completely out there and chose a lino print for the first episode. It was very good and did deserve to be in the top 3.  I have also been recording really old episodes of watercolour challenge, I used to love that years ago, but I never remembered all the poetic waffling in it 😂😂 it's really enjoyable anyway. Did anyone ever enter this?
For once I agreed with the judges on their top three! It will interesting to see what the lino print artist does next in the semi final. In the past the judges have looked for a degree of versatility in the winning artist. This must be a big challenge for lino print in just 4 hours!
I don't have Sky, but I too remember Watercolour Challenge, and the syrupily-read poetry.  Rupert Cordeux took part (and while I don't remember, I'm sure won).   From what I've heard of the Sky programme, it could give the BBC a few lessons on how to conduct a painting competition: but I speak from ignorance.  My disposable income, such as it is, goes on wine, cigars, and paint; oh, and gin.  Not on subscriptions to TV channels.  I call this sensible budgeting, but other analyses are available: not welcome, but available.
I don't have Sky, but I do enjoy a TV art competition. I think what one has to bear in mind that, during the early stages at least, (and certainly during the selection of artists), the producers are looking for "good TV" rather the art. As with "The Apprentice", the most hopeless candidate may be the most entertaining, and therefore worth keeping on for a few episodes.
I watched and enjoyed the first episode. I’m not sure about the Lino cut lady. She was very good and they do seem to like a Lino cut or anything that’s not “just painting “!  I agree with Ian that in this sort of programme they are looking for “good or entertaining tv”, and that personality (eg the guy in full chefs outfit!) is almost as important as artistic talent.  Looking forward to the next episode!
Gary, I didnt quite agree with the top 3, I thought the young lad from Peru (I think it was) was really good, and they missed out on a talent there, but I never fully agree with them, and I usually hate their winner 😂 Ha ha ha Robert you do make me giggle, you do have lifes priorities the right way around. Yes it's far superior to the BBC drivel that's on. I wish they would take up watercolour challenge again though, it could be fantastic now. As I'm still really enjoying watching the old reruns.  Ian your definitely right, they do opt for good tv and focus on the ones that perform for the camera. I do wish they would show us more of the wildcards, some of their work is outstanding. Maybe they could put them online. Ohh may put that on the sky arts facebook page 😂😂 Tessa was their any need for him doing that? Seriously he just annoyed everyone and made an idiot of himself. He was a good painter and ruined it by being an idiot.
I watch both the landscape and portrait versions of the  Sky programme and have often been bemused by the 'anti-painter' comments of a couple of the judges. Better to watch it as an entertainment programme rather than a painting or art programme.
Yeah Peter that's what I tend to do now, and I enjoy it far more than I did at first. It uses to really annoy me lol. Cant wait for tomorrows!!
Well I dont know how they choose this weeks, thought they were all good and I was torn. What a fabulously difficult and excitingly different landscape they had to paint. Hope next week is just as good. What did you lot think?
I thought their initial submissions were fantastic and easily the best I can remember seeing, but some of the paintings on the day didnt quite match up to expectations. It certainly was a challenging scene and the weather was even worse than usual! I did like the mirror balls and would like to have a go at painting those, but did feel sorry for the wild cards. You have enough gear to carry for plein air painting without having to rig up huge brollies and tents! I sometimes think they deserve more of a mention.
I love LAOTY. And yes the weather was awful!! The artists were wonderful to watch and Herstmonceux is a magical place. Felt sorry for the lady who painted with triangles faced with the spheres!
Interesting scene to paint this week, would have enjoyed the challenge and I thought they all did well, Was very impressed with the submission paintings especially the one by the guy from Ireland, but others were also good, seems maybe the standard has improved but agree the wild cards deserve more attention,
