It’s the second of three features looking at the techniques and working methods/materials of famous artists.
The May issue will feature Rowland Hilder, followed in June, by my analysis and observations of JMW Turner’s watercolour sketchbooks.
The current (April) edition is on sale now, and covers the oil painting practices of Edward Seago!
I hope that some of you will find them helpful.

I read the article Alan and it was excellent as always. I actually use that palette often and I am a big fan of Indian red. It's a great demonstration and I really like the low horizons. The board preparation was interesting and I might use this at some point. Looking forward to the next article in the series.

Thanks Denise, glad you found it useful.
I’ve had some good response which is always encouraging, many commenting and asking for more information on the support preparation of gesso and chalk.
Basically, it’s simply a thickish mix, there’s no particular ratio used… you can make it as thick or thin as required!
