The mirror wasn't directly in front of me, it was to the side, I don't know if you can see my head is turned, I had to position it so the lamp would reach and I had the small mirror on some books so I could see. The conditions were not ideal. Well actually, I had injured my back the day before and was proped up on the sofa. My sketch pad was on my knees and the table to the side. My back is much better today thankfully but yesterday I could hardly move.

Re self portraits using a mirror….never easy , wherever you put the mirror. I’ve tried using two mirrors, the image you’re copying being in the second mirror…but It’s hard to set up and, obviously, you have to have two fairly large mirrors.
Marjorie have you thought of trying out Ewan’s technique…….yikes! 🫣
Fiona, I did! I might well do ….it would take a bit of setting up and my eyesight at a distance is not great. I’m enjoying myself so much this afternoon. We have to paint part of or a whole famous painting for a topic at the club. I’m doing a part - I have some claybord which I bought at Patchings. Haven’t primed it. It’s so interesting to use!
I wouldn’t know where to begin a Ewan style portrait, I can’t even copy an easy one! Did you post the one you did on the gallery? Love what you’ve done here, looks very Rembrandt-ish…..skin tones are lovely.
It’s supposed to be Rembrandt but I’ll need to adjust the features.
Tried a self portrait in pencil a while ago but wasn’t great. I have been dabbling with portraits recently which have been improved so need to keep practicing and learn from the mistakes! Here is a very strange looking horse in gel pen !
I like the Lucian Freud style portrait, they are very intense self portraits. I also like what he does with the lighting in them, very dramatic. Good sketch Gillian.
It IS Rembrandt Marjorie, I did recognise him. When I said “ish” I didn’t know if it was a self portrait, or painted by someone else….it looks like his style?
Yes, it is part of him, my version, but not finished yet. I got side tracked…..
I like the idea of a self portrait, for those who have the courage to try, but I don’t, so I went with this little Prinknash jug which is always a handy still life subject!
You should only paint what you fancy painting Tessa, otherwise where is the inspiration?
