I came across an article yesterday on a site called Art Amiba it posted up the 5 worst example ever of Art Speak , I printed the one voted the worst ever unfortunately it doesn't give the artists name . Why do artists come out with this twadddle is it merely to pump the price up ? What sort of person finds this gibberish meaningful and persuasive ? WORST EVER ARTIST STATEMENT : 1)“These images represent the juxtaposition of the timeless and majestic elegance of nature’s sensory-surpassing miracles with the entangled and growing tensions of our time in culturally reconnecting with the shift away from the human condition of love. In developing my visual perspective, I’ve discerned the fleeting significance from the invariable through emphasizing the growing collective disdain for the socially underdeveloped that has come to define our generation and crystallized over the last decade. Through highlighting this generational discontent in honing its cultural responsibility of deconstructing traditional understanding of social roles against the unrefined purity of the emotionally captivating cycles of nature, my work serves as a middle ground to visually level and gauge the social progress of man by means of extremities occurring in class stratification. In giving careful attention to the mediating filters that propagates socially-constructed irreverence, I aim to address the necessity of breaking down the symbolic paradigms of understanding to revisit the overlooked empathy for humanity and its greater accountability to each other.”
What sort of person?, self-opinionated idiots Dermot, and I'm not sure the art world in general accepts this talk although invariably there will be some odd-bods around the circuit who will lap it up. It's been said on here many times, those who feel that this nonsense is justified will almost certainly be those who's work is lacking in some form or another, hence the need to create such waffle to accompany their prized piece. It could be worse I suppose, you could find yourself seated next to him/her at a function, horror or what...
Yes, it's an extreme example of artspeak. I don't know why some artists wish to write in such a way. I think it's written like that to impress other like minded artists, rather than the average viewer. My hunch is that the artist doesn't read much and so doesn't have a clue how to communicate in writing.
I think many are taught this language at Art Colleges. Graduates, including a couple of close relatives, seem to have to speak twaddle in order to get their degree.
If art needs to be explained, it's failed in its primary purpose. The above isn't even grammatical - the writer knows it's meaningless, you can almost see the tongue in his or her cheek but I think Stub is right: they're taught in some art colleges that this sort of tripe goes down well with the gallery owners, critics and high-end punters. There's still no excuse for it. http://www.isleofwightlandscapes.net http://www.wightpaint.blogspot.co.uk
What a load of cobblers. Many other examples scattered about too
Actually I think you can get a computer program that spouts reams of this stuff to order. John
Would I buy work from this person - not on your Nellie! There are a few who publish their work in the Gallery and their profile is also very 'arty speak'. What's the point?
What's really worrying is that the artist might have paid someone to come up with this rubbish
That is funny and from your very down to earth brain very clever Sylvia
A couple of thoughts: ( a mini-rant, if you like (-:) I try never to be judgemental on anyone's art. It's like life, comes in all shapes and sizes of humanity, skill, intelligence and sometimes (not nearly often enough,) just plain common sense. "Leave them to it, it's just a picture" is fine by me in most cases. What does irritate me is when an "artist" just bodges paint around on paper, canvas etc, invents a deeply soul-searching title then explains it all with twaddle of the type discussed here. Sad to say, but art is full of charlatans who don't just draw or paint, etc, but expect others to see it as something it obviously isn't by just airing a view Thankfully, as a pure "paint for pleasure" person, I can afford to laugh at those art critics who couldnt paint a garden shed yet slate everyone by explaining mortal faults in artists' work. The irony of it all is that some people pay obscene amounts of money (multi millions) for works that couldn't buy the original artists a drink, never mind a living. Such is the world of art...Here's to you Vincent!.. Rant over.....(-:
I have just copied Dermot's original post into an announcement on my upcoming show. The announcement is on a caravan club forum so I am hoping for some good laugh comments back
