Where does your inspiration come from?. Something seen. A memory . An emotion.
All of that, Sylvia. I also get inspired by looking at art, not to copy it, it just gets me going. Often things you see will do it, I need to make little notes to myself...scribbled thumbnails and a few words (it takes moments to do), otherwise I'll forget. 'A family dressed in Halloween gear at a bus-stop.' for example. I love to read, I must have a book on the go at all times. I'll illustrate something I've read about. I like the 'WHAT IF?' idea...what if so and so happened...I've got a scribbled note about Lady Godiva. She came up briefly in an antique program I was watching, and I thought...WHAT IF everybody came out and cheered her through the streets (she was doing her famous ride for them, after all.) Haven't got around to that yet. Lew.
Colour does it for me. Am always stimulated by bright colours or else soft colours, mainly the primaries and secondaries and mixes of them. I dislike black intensely and brown doesn't do much for me either although it is sometimes necessary.
It's almost a compulsion to paint something daily. Of course, there has to be the enjoyment of doing it or why bother? I enjoy picking a pen, pencil, brush up and a clean sheet of paper. Sometimes, I haven't the faintest idea what's going to come out. All part of the fun. (Note to self, must delete some of my gallery files. I've amassed a ridiculous amount) 😆
Light, number one - particularly lighting effects on branches, buildings, grasses, and the tonal contrasts it gives; although a lot of my stuff isn't especially strongly lit at all - which is something I think I want to rectify. The other thing is dreams - eg, I dreamt about a derelict house, and have painted and drawn it several times. Textures also feature strongly - shapes, lines, patterns. And taking advantage of my poor eyesight to look at old paintings of my own - I can often find a shape in them to be used for something totally different; myopia blurs the details, but not the big shapes.
for me it's the feeling of contentedness after putting so much focus in, it's definitely an addiction I can't describe the feeling it's not joy, it's almost relief or like I'm alleviating a weight that I've put upon myself, oddly the process of sketching the image from my mind onto paper, adding colors and shape makes me feel relaxed.
Same as Robert, LIGHT, light casting shadows, particularly on buildings, but on anything really, sparkling water is gorgeous also. Without light and shadows everything looks flat.
Oooh I think light and colour in the landscape for me, and then I get super inspired seeing other people's work...it sort of lifts me and drives me forward to create more and more. Like wanderer69 said above its almost a compulsion to paint or create daily. I actually don't know what I'd do without it!
I'm inspired by things I see in the landscape (not that I'm a landscape painter). Especially things that might a story behind them - abandoned farm machinery, old walls and fences, broken things. I also get inspiration from dreams. In a recent dream I was looking at a painting I had entered in an open art exhibition - standing in front of it and really studying what I had done. The art exhibition is a real one and is open for entries right now, so guess what I'm doing :) Kay M
