Anything that I feel may be of some interest to others, but that's all subjective of course. I probably only post around 30% of my output but much of my work involves small and insignificant sketches which I wouldn't dream of posting - I only post one piece of artwork per day so as not to clog up the gallery - a sore point with me!.

Good question. I can't say I only post the better stuff...I have doubts about everything I do, sometimes the work I like best gets the least attention, so I'm not very good at selecting my own work. It's nice to get feedback, people sometimes read things differently to me and that's interesting too. I like to see other people's sketchbook work, so I believe that obliges me to post my sketchbook efforts. (Sometimes I do sketchy scribbles that take seconds to do...I don't post them). It's good to get your work seen, and I appreciate people making the effort to comment on it.

I agree about critiques, but we're all struggling happily with something that isn't easy to do, and I'd hate to put somebody off. There is a critique section in the forum, I suppose you put your work there if you really want to suffer. There's a lot of waffle talked about 'constructive criticism', when what people really want is 'constructive praise.' Most of us are critical of our own work, anyway. There's always a doubt when I post stuff. A while back I posted an art deco pic, I knew I'd got the girls pose wrong (because I didn't step back to look at it...drat), but liked enough of the picture to post it. It had a good feedback, but only David H commented on the pose...but it was done in an unoffensive way, and he was telling me what I already knew.
On the rare occasions that I see something I don't like, I don't comment on it. (I'll hastily add that I also don't comment on a lot of work because it zips through the system, and I don't always have time to wade through the gallery.)
If you're interested in the Art Deco pic I mentioned...I mean this one....

An excellent piece Lew, your illustrative skills are beyond good... An interesting point you make, do we post with a view (or hope) of getting praise?, not me, I generally get good press so to speak, but not always. However, I do appreciate people taking the time to comment, but as you say, they disappear so quickly it's not always possible to keep up with them all.

I post too much. There, I've admitted it. Why, because I regard P.O.L as a big friendly painters social club. My gallery is way overloaded (I intend to delete stacks soon..honestly) but it's all about fun for me as I'm not an artist, just an enthusiastic amateur and don't try to make a living from art as I never sell anything. I'm also well retired so P.O.L is a hobby and enjoyment. My sketchbooks ( of which I have a great many, boxes full under beds etc) are mainly drawing books used daily and I accept the point about posting too many items. I do try to space things out over a day and don't bang up four items all at once, which I admit can be annoying. I 'll try to stick to a couple per day....honestly....😆

I post gallery stuff which I think is "better than the stuff I've posted before", so hopefully I can show I'm climbing that mountain. I'm not fishing for praise and I'm not so flakey that I'll fall apart if someone says a picture's garbage.
What I've noticed though is that I like how my stuff looks online. The small gallery page image makes it look a lot better than it probably is; likewise Twitter and Facebook.

Several of you have summed up perfectly how I feel about this site - a lovely group of "friends". I am quite selective, only posting work that I feel is at least partially acceptable. I would actually be quite happy for criticism which helps me to improve (Disaster was posted for that reason), but am also very appreciative of the positive feedback too, as I do lack confidence in my painting. Belonging to POL has helped a lot.

To be honest, I post things on something of a whim ..... I've posted a lot in the past, so ration myself these days. It's always interesting to have honest opinions, which I value - and I also value salivating praise! Such is my human weakness....
I suppose I also post precisely in order to gain serious comment - which has often been of great service to me and made me think. You just never know what you're going to get - you're lucky of course if you get anything, thanks to the rate of churn - and that's part of the fun of it.
I think the conclusion here is that I don't really know how I choose what to post, perhaps. But - it's always a bit of a punt, and sometimes it's very rewarding.
