Yeah, seen it too. Really like it. Looks like he’s had a bonfire.

This painting is exceptional. Re. my comments on photography and painting; I don’t think photographers, studio or not, have the control over lighting that painters can apply to a work. No photographer could match this lighting, because it would be impossible, they couldn’t get light into all the spaces it penetrates here. A painter can create a total environment that suits them. So in a way the painting works because it’s totally artificial. Edit: I think a painting like this is closer to the experience we have of seeing something. Edit: I don’t know why all those images came up.

Catherina van Hemessen (1528- after 1565): Painted by Catherina at the age of twenty. This is thought to be the first self portrait to depict the artist at the easel: Sofonisba Anguissola (c.1532-1625): A close second, painted in 1556:

I can’t imagine mirrors to be that great back then.  Sofonisba Anguissola (c.1532-1625): A close second, painted in 1556:

Those are fascinating Brett....look at that tiny palette and all those brushes in her hand - I couldn't paint like that! She was a great artist and another one I'd never heard of.
Plagiarism eh. Looks like I'm wasting m' bloody time.
She has the same palette, no doubt saw the original and was inspired or in the same studio? But I much prefer the second one...I know the painting well, just can't think of her name.
