This painting is exceptional. Re. my comments on photography and painting; I don’t think photographers, studio or not, have the control over lighting that painters can apply to a work. No photographer could match this lighting, because it would be impossible, they couldn’t get light into all the spaces it penetrates here. A painter can create a total environment that suits them. So in a way the painting works because it’s totally artificial.
Edit: I think a painting like this is closer to the experience we have of seeing something.

Catherina van Hemessen (1528- after 1565): Painted by Catherina at the age of twenty. This is thought to be the first self portrait to depict the artist at the easel: Interesting. I can’t imagine mirrors to be that great back then.Sofonisba Anguissola (c.1532-1625): A close second, painted in 1556:
