First of all, apologies for lowering the tone. I’m not a portrait painter, I would love to have the skill and patience to complete work equal to the standard and excellence of those that have been posted here. You are a talented lot! I’ve had to scratch about for anything that resembles a portrait, the first is a selfie, the second a pencil sketch after Ginny Grayson whose work I love,  and last but not least my very first and last, live portrait which I did about six years ago. That’s as good as it gets I’m afraid! ☹️ ,
Oh Fiona, the first portrait is a dead ringer for me, first thing in the morning, it's a great portrait of me. I think the variety of portraits has been great and it makes me want to try harder. I think this is a very enjoyable post, encouraging lot's of interest on the forum. Well done Linda and Jenny for bringing it about.
A young me in Modigliano style and me aged about 20, which is what I had in mind when I did the pastel.
It's been a pleasure seeing all these portraits. I haven't done many, but after a look round, more than I thought. This is the young Toulouse Lautrec (not that he lived long, poor fellow).  In the big gap I painted some characters from his paintings.  I got Lautrec done first, wanting that to be OK, before spending more time on the rest. I put this Einstein sketch on my Pinterest board.  Oddly it's the one most chosen by others to pin on their boards...not what I'd have thought...but what people like often surprises. This is a portrait of my son and his family done a few years back.  This style of painting is called 'quadrant' style...a style I liked at the time. From photos, of course.
I have never tried a portrait.  Nearest to one was putting a small Stirling Moss in one of his old cars and I found it very difficult to get anything like a likeness.  However, I saw a mention of a Zorn palette on another thread and from that found a Utube demo of a portrait using those colours.  It looked very interesting and I think I'll give it a go.  May be awhile before i have anything to post here though!  Wife says i cannot paint her so it will have to be from a photo.  Any suggestions?
Steve, I would suggest a selfie to start with. Just remember that mirror image is back to front, so you may want to use a photo (with some good shadows). It's my favourite subject, but there are never enough subjects to paint. Selfie plus family make a great start and I've contributed to a small 'rogues' gallery of 'in-laws'. My favourites consist of one of my first charcoal sketches, a portrait (in oil) of my wife and a selfie, in pencil, I use as my avatar... My selfie was the gallery image with the most views, which I can't understand. Probably because I have to look at it every morning in the mirror.

Selfies are great to practise from but they are so hard! You usually end up with a very intense expression. You could get someone to take a close up of you at first of course and that would be easier, it’s already 2D. Have a go Steve.
Some beautiful portraits so far. I’m not a portrait painter, I’ve tried in the past but I find them difficult. However, this is a portrait that my 16 year old granddaughter, Lily, did of her cousin, Anna.   She’s in her first year at college, studying art.

There are some great portraits being displayed, Fiona, yours are full of character, Marjorie, you are such an attractive lady, beautiful portrait! Ron, great to see your lovely portrait of your wife, and you of course, sorry Lew almost forgot yours, great drawings as usual, Ellen, your grandaughter is showing a lot of talent already. Well done. This is a few graphite pencil sketches I've dug out for now.
Some amazing portraits on here .love the young you Marjorie ala Modigliani.   Whetted my appetite.  Might get a bit more serious about it.  I know  I can use “me” .  In a mirror.  But I  always  have this squinty, ancient, harridan  as an end result.  No comments required, thank you.
Nowadays Sylvia, we all have that squinty eyed old bag looking back - well, I do😂
I can give you a few years...lol.
