Photorealistic, surreal , impressionist, digital , left handed thumb missing , what ever if it is created by a person then to me it’s a piece of art . Like Jenny I admire the skill used to create those b&w portraits and I have to do a double take to be sure it a drawing etc but I would not buy one to hand on the wall.
If I happen to like it then for me it’s a good piece of art , I don’t think there is rubbish art given it’s possibly the best a person can do it just not as good as others. Well there’s been diplomatic but I’m sure you know what I’m getting at, and because I don’t like it doesn’t make it rubbish. Who any I to criticise anyone else, there is always something good in a paint, unless it’s Bob Ross of course thought I would get that in before Robert.

Let's leave BR out of it....Red rag to Roberts . At least I know no one is EVER likely to say anything of mine is Just like a photograph... I would topple over in complete surprise.
Back to its all in the eye of the beholder...if I like a painting and it's super photorealistic then so be it. Admittedly that picture of John Lennon is amazing and the artists skill is gobsmacking yes he is is a craftsperson; as he knows how to use his tools..
JL is popping up everywhere at the moment.

Fascinating discussion. I have painted since I was about 12. I didn't persue art as a living til I was about 25. I enrolled in art classes, and was determined to paint so well, that it looked photographic. I went into graphics and trompe l'oeil. After many years of making my living that way, I retired, and started over.
I still have an urge to over-detail things, but intentionally stop short. I admire the artist who chooses the meticulous over the less rigid. It is a "double edged" situation. Many viewer see the meticulous as more interesting. It's a bit like comparing Opera to Pop. Both have merit.
