Ah yes Syd, but someone might be able to answer the question on the Forum. You don't know and you can't answer for all of us. Let us decide whether we want to interest ourselves in the subjects, after all you have the power of your finger to choose the "off" button!

Be fair, Syd - he was asked to keep us informed, and that's what he's done. Unfortunately he doesn't seem to be getting anywhere and at this rate I don't think he's going to; but if you read the previous comments and also visit the website, you'll see efforts have been made to get expert opinion, the trouble is that the expert opinion hasn't come up with anything conclusive. But like you, I think I've shot my bolt on this one: my best bet was the Emperor Charles, but my historical knowledge isn't good enough to tie it to a specific event. And I'm probably wrong anyway.

Thank you for all your advice, I have tried WetCanvas with some luck. I didn't cause offence with my thread and hope it hasn't been taken the wrong way. I totally understand where you're coming from Syd (and I agree to an extent) and I do feel a bit cheeky not contributing to the forum but unfortunately it's not my area of expertise, but the internet can be so powerful. Friend of a friend and all that. I'll come back if there's any updates. We have had another few insightful comments come through but like you it IS likely that we will never know the answer, but it is a fun hunt and a great website nonetheless. Best

You didn't cause offence to the majority of us oldmasterrich, in fact we had a lot of fun and enjoyment, but it is a fact that you can't please everyone. Please do let us know if you find out anything else about the painting.
