I get emails from Tate Modern to let me know what is happening. I have just had one to advertise this artists up and coming retrospective in the Autumn . And this quote was part of the email. It’s rather wonderful, any more favourite quotes anyone .? . ANNI ALBERS ARTIST QUOTE 'Art is something that makes you breathe with a different kind of happiness.'
I like art quotes, but Sylvia, that one is a bit gushy for me...a bit Geoffrey Art-Spasm...it's a posh way of saying 'you enjoy art'. But I agree with the sentiment. I prefer the more matter of fact stuff...RENE MAGRITTE...'Life obliges me to do something, so I paint.' Lew.
John, I don't know if it's on a different take, but that really made me laugh. And Sylvia, the Degas quote is the kind I like best of all...no fluff, straight in, right on the button. Lew.
I also love John's quote even though I find sculpture (modern) far more exciting than the majority of predictable art work. I just wish my garden was large enough to accommodate some large statement pieces. I will post a couple of my recent smaller (abstract) driftwood sculptures over the next couple of days and it'll be interesting to see what others make of them.
Just posted the first - here's a short cut if you want to take a look: https://www.painters-online.co.uk/gallery/art-view,picture_229064.htm
The quote from Degas ".Painting is easy when you don't know how, but very difficult when you do." is great. It is so true!! I've just been doing my very first commission, and I've found it nerve racking to say the least. It's a dog portrait which a friend wanted for her daughter's birthday. I think I started it about three times until I was satisfied it looked OK, I will take a photo tomorrow and post in the gallery. I found it a different ball game when drawing for someone else and I do hope she likes it.
I was there earlier this year Sylvia - magical. Oh, and I've just posted another wee found wood sculpture in the gallery.

Sylvia. Been there a number of times; used to live near Wakefield. Some dispute the term sculpture being applied to his work but I do like Andy Goldsworthy's stuff. I find the apparent contradiction between the transience of his works and the permanence of 'traditional' sculpture intriguing.
"Every child is an artist. The problem is, how to remain an artist once we grow up" - Pablo Picasso. In Bolton Town Hall Art Gallery, museum and library we have a magnificently poignant bronze sculpture by Sir Jacob Epstein called "Slave Hold" Not sure if wood carving is regarded as sculpture or a seperate art, but having seen some uttely staggeringly beautiful work in churches and cathedrals, choir stalls etc, I am totally a slave to the magnificence of the Grinling Gibbons ( and all his modern counterparts) of this world. The beauty of their art is beyond description. I was a patternmaker for 16 years and later did a couple of things of small note: I carved a Lancashire rose in the back of a Bishops's throne ( probably long replaced now) in Lancaster Cathedral for a guy who made church funriture and couldn't find a wood carver, and painted the Truro City Arms on the back again of a Bishops throne at that time in Truro Cathedral. (picture) The thirteen silver balls represent the thirteen bags of silver donated by the City of Truro towards the ransom of Richard the Lionheart. The picture is a photograph of a photograph and many years old, and thus not too great. The chair was oak and later was polished and a leather seat fitted. I was quite proud of both at the time. (-:
