Much as I enjoy and am encouraged by comments on my work in POL and try to respond also commenting (hopefully constructively) on many other pieces, the same names appear under my posting of new work. No disrespect and I am extremely pleased to be accepted in the gallery and forum. There are so may new names appearing daily, which is marvellous but none of them respond or comment, so why are they in here? Just to show, which is common to a lot of art society members but only for exhibiting? Puzzled but there will be answers.
I agree Derek whilst it is wonderful to receive comments on our work we must also comment on others .Imagine if nobody commented it becomes such a one side affair .P.O.L.is an excellent site to get feedback on one's work. during our day to day activities as artists how often do we get to talk about art with others well here is an opportunity.so those people who love getting (hopefully positive feedback) give feedback in return
I must agree, there is a core of around perhaps 20 or so members who regularly comment, and Derek is right to ask, what is wrong with the others?, If you are part of a 'club' so to speak, you should contribute. This last week or two I have made an effort to comment on very many newcomers work, at least a dozen, possibly more and what do I get in return - Nothing, not a squeak. The reason is obvious, they just can't be bothered, one way traffic all the time. I don't hold with the idea that people are too shy to participate and all that rubbish, absolute nonsense - It takes nothing to make a small effort and contribute.
I think sometimes when you're new you have to accept things will be one sided especially where the gallery is as fast changing as the POL gallery is. I've posted 4 pieces in the past few months and made numerous comments and likes and have received one comment... even when one of my pieces of work was placed in the 'month of January' bar... but that's ok. I wasn't expecting anything and so wasn't disappointed.
I'm happy just to get a "like", but making a contribution to the debate sometimes requires a level of understanding beyond my skillset. I'll get there :-)
Dermot please don't stop. I do comment on some of your postings but not all and not all regular commenters comment on all of mine. However that's not to say that they are not appreciated and I am sure that that also goes for your excellent work. If you do go it will be a sad day
I would also like you to keep posting Dermot, your work in interesting and at times inspirational, we need artist's of your calibre. However, all that said, I do know what you mean, I have gone through phases of asking myself, 'why should I bother', but I bounce back with different styles of work and of course I do enjoy participating on the forum, not that everyone feels the same about both my work or my comments, having been labelled as 'arrogant', but I probably am, and at times I have to say what I feel and will continue to do so into the future.
Stay with us please Dermot. The idea of commenting on work to get a recipient is not the aim certainly. I feel it will help in some way to keep comments progressing and reasonable communication between us in POL, as it's been said I like to know folk view my stuff at least. I am not a hermit starving artist avoiding talks and laughs with other like minded souls as you can tell. There are times I miss a bunch of 1 or 2 days and try to go back, but can't always due to time constraints even in my grand retirement with no other interests apart from running (once), walking, drinking, travelling, eating and chores and feel guilty, partly because I like to see if the comment I made have been picked up. POL is a smashing FREE facility to have.
We 'artists' are a temperamental bunch aren't we but then most creative people are I suppose. We spend so much time in solitary confinement whether it be in a studio [ so very grand but in my case, the spare bedroom! ] or out doors [ 'en plain air' to use the pompous terminology! ] producing our 'work,' that it's only natural to crave an audience to then view our efforts on completion of our 'masterpiece!' It's a visual art form after all and this wonderful site gives us the opportunity to do just that. I venture to suggest however, that we 'artists' are not all blessed with bullet proof self confidence and perhaps seek some reassurance and positivity from fellow artists to boost our self esteem and massage our rather delicate egos from time to time. It's so very pleasing to receive a comment from someone saying they've liked what you've done and it can certainly inspire one to stride forward with more self assurance. Conversely, to not receive a comment can for some I guess, have the opposite affect and to receive a totally negative one is I imagine, absolutely devastating. Whenever I log on to POL it's with a feeling of anticipation and excitement because I know that I will see something that will appeal to me, inspire me and frustrate me too! I invariably leave comments every time I visit the site, but as we all know, it's impossible to comment on every posting. Why do we comment on some and not on others? Ah marmite! Like it or loathe it right? I do have a tendency to comment on watercolours because I have no idea how to use the medium and am so impressed by those who can such as you good self Dermot. I've commented on your excellent work in the past and I sincerely hope that you will give me the chance to do so again in the future! ** For the 'Techno crew' - It's a shame that the 'like' facility can't state the name of the person when applied!?
