I've posted a new video on the Community Videos page of this site where I talk about exploration of tone and surface in drawing and painting. I hope you enjoy it. D. x
I thought the video was very good and I started painting a few months ago and started drawing a few weeks ago. I have been thinking about faces recently but being new to it all, haven't had the confidence to try. I am practicing tree's this week, next week, I will watch this video again and make it a mission to give it a go. The community video's are great for a beginner like me. I think it is very kind for all the very experienced artist's to share their knowledge and skills.
Jump straight into it PP - portraits and self portraits are great fun, very satisfying and an easy way to gauge progress.
They're also a good way of understanding what you actually look like (provided they're approached honestly of course) as opposed to what you thought (or hoped) you look like; a voyage of discovery all round.
Yes indeed, creating a truthful representation of yourself is the key in self portraits.  Start with some large A2 or even A1 layout pads and a few sticks of charcoal and go for it. Set a time limit and don’t fiddle about with detail, work on getting your proportions right. A likeness will come later... Don’t fiddle around with small sheets of paper, express yourself and once you have spent a few months (minimum) on just drawing technique, think about moving into colour. And it’s a great way to get started with portraits. Once you have gained confidence in this most difficult and challenging of disciplines, you can join a college class, once these facilities become available again.
Thanks, all advice taken on board. I am going to buy a couple of better quality brushes on Monday, so I will pick up a large layout pad and some charcoal sticks at the same time.
Thanks for sharing😉 I agree that the video turned out pretty good. I immediately realized that the installation was carried out by a professional with certain skills. But, I would advise adding convert to your content image-to-video for better effect and visibility. This will help convey your ideas and information to visitors in a more accessible way. I believe that this is the best option for promoting your video.
