Some are detailed, some are quite minimal in their detail. I like all of his, these two caught my eye because of their impressionistic feel.
That Venice scene is a masterclass in tonal values… simplicity being the key word here - four tones only and what an impact they have!  Proof perhaps that it’s not necessarily colour that creates the impact in a painting - something I learned years ago!

Really enjoyed exploring the work of Ken Howard this week. So many great paintings and many impressionistic in style. I loved his paintings of water and especially Venice- his painting of light on water is wonderful.
I’ve always been attracted to Modigliani’s work, perhaps because of his individual style - elongated necks, almond shaped eyes etc, but also his colour palette of blue greens against warm earth tones. I won’t repeat his life story here, it’s easy to research, except to say how tragic it seemed , his death followed a day later by his partner, Jeanne Hébuterne, who committed suicide at 8 months pregnant. I’ve been lucky to go to an exhibition of his work and I wasn’t disappointed. Below, Modigliani himself and Jeanne H. He painted many portraits of her, plus those of fellow artists. I’ll be interested to learn if anyone else is a fan….

I added, for a bit of fun, my “ Modigliani version” of myself - have a go!
Ken Howard RA. His 'variations on a theme' dvd was recommended to me. Apart from how to use oil paint, two things have stuck in my mind 'site sizing' and how to grid up a painting from small to large. An inspiration, indeed.

I really liked The Cellist and Jeanne Hebuterne with Hat and Necklace. I think his work is amazing and so interesting to look at. I like his out of proportion faces and twisted noses. Your self portrait in his style is also excellent Marjorie, must have a go.

His work is interesting and so distinctive - these are a few of his paintings that I like the most.   Wasn’t previously aware of his life story - brought up in a well to do family but descended into a life of chaos and poverty.

The top one you chose, Jenny, is so elegant, the way she is placed in the painting.

I like his work which is unusual for me as I don’t normally look at or take much notice of portraits. I’m a bit of a traditionalist when it come to portraits , but the (forgive me ) the quirkiness  is attracting . I have always thought that you don’t have to like a artist subjects to admire their skill and he is very skilled.
That is a wonderful depiction of yourself, Marjorie. I hope this self portrait in the style of Modigliani catches on.  I'll be having a go.
