AMANDA GREIVE, an American artist, graduated with a batchelor’s degree in visual arts from the University of Illinois in 2008 and now works from her home studio on a farm in Central Illinois. Her themes developed from a foundation in still life to exploring figurative narratives. Currently her detailed and intriguing paintings are wholly concerned with women, how society perceives them, and their struggles in life. Botanics serve as symbols and metaphors, drawing upon the historical meanings of flowers.
Her hyper-realistic compositions, painted in oil on wood panel, reference both classical and contemporary symbolism. She finds inspiration in hearing the stories her models tell and in researching floral history and symbolism. The paintings in this series are the product of many of these conversations and each represents a woman’s struggle in life.

I am never sure how I feel about art like this. Yes, I can appreciate and even be in awe of the skill it takes, but the subject matter? There's always an edge to it that makes it not entirely comfortable. Browsing her work I came across this one. It's similar to one of Jenny's original choices (No 5 if I can still count). It has an almost pre-Raphaelite air about it.

I must admit at first I thought these were doctored photos, before I read Jenny’s introduction. Like Tony I can appreciate the painting skill but her work doesn’t appeal to me, even though part of me wishes it did for her reasoning behind it.
Just not for me.
Maybe she wants to make us feel uncomfortable? Some artists obviously do. 🤔

Skill beyond comprehension… well almost anyway!
But, as others have said, they don’t do anything for me I’m afraid, and I don’t pretend to understand the majority of them…
Sitting blindfolded in a chair holding a plant, is just beyond my comprehension! I could go on, but enough said from me.
That doesn’t take away the fact that Jenny has given a great intro, and introduced me and other members to a different artist, that’s never a bad thing!

I was initially drawn to her work as it reminded me of Andrea Kowch whose paintings we looked at much earlier in the Inspirations thread. Both artists produce a slightly surreal feel. (It was the first one of the girl with the birds that made me look further.) Amanda Greive doesn’t explain what’s behind each of her paintings, but to me it doesn’t really matter if I like them, although I understand that others may feel uncomfortable with the theme of her work.

Yes Jenny, I had the same thought, she reminds me of Andrea Kowch too. As you say, this artists work has the same surreal touch. I don’t think it matters if you are unsure what the meaning is, I prefer those artists who offer no explanation. They are inviting you to make your own interpretation. It can be devisive, everyone has different opinions…which is good. I admire this artist and Andrea Kowch.
