Welcome to this weekends bonus artist thread, the featuring artist this weekend is .
John Hambelton Holdcroft 1926 - 2014. British artist born in Bristol where his father owned a shoe shop in the city , where the family lived until it was destroyed by a flying bomb in WW11. John was educated at the Bristol Cathedral School where he discovered his talent for drawing and creating cartoon series.
Called up in 1944 , he later held a commission in the Black Watch serving in Germany during the post war reconstruction. Four years as a soldier was followed by a spell in the Carthusian Monastery at Crawford in Surrey where he discerned his artist vocation and returned to Bristol to study art at the West of England College of Art.
Full bio available at burstowandhewitt.co.Uk.
Holdcroft painted in many different style , including abstract and produced a lot of pencil and pen sketches.
I have selected a variety of his artwork to open with.

I was unable to post some of the artwork I had selected.

Julie I started the thread along with Dawn the editor at the time and was joined by Jenny a few years ago . My thoughts at the time was to introduce artists we find inspiring , that people know or may not have known , with the hope that it’s inspiring, anyone can suggest a artist . I manage the list and set up the weekly thread, if someone wants to introduce an artist as Lew I’d doing this coming week then the add the introduction and select the initial paintings. We then comment and add more of their work that we find inspiring. It’s moved on a bit for me and as I now look out artist for the thread , something different etc, but not always someone I find particularly inspirational. Hope this helps , if you have a artist you would like to share please let me have the name , we have covered a thousand or so artists so they may be in the archives and I can let you know when they were featured.

Paul, I have noticed a growing trend in on-line images to be in the .webp format which doesn't load into the POL forum. You can change these to jpg or other formats quite easily. I use a free open source photo manipulation package called GIMP, which is useful for many other things, but simply open the image file, then 'File/Export As' and look for the rather small 'Select File Type' option bottom left. I have been using GIMP for several years so it is quite safe and reliable.

Thanks Tony and Norrette , I have a blank page when it comes to technology, give me a good old fashioned mechanical problem and I will solve it , technology is just out of my understanding. My two granddaughters age nine and thirteen sort out all iPad and Chromebook problems in minutes, usually accompanied by well grandad you just do this , fingers moving so fast I can’t see them touching the keyboard.
