Welcome to this weeks thread , the featuring Artists are : Jill Barklem and Peter Knox,  Jenny will open with her introduction to Jill Barklem and on Wednesday I will introduce my chosen artist Peter Knox . Have a good week and enjoy your art .
JILL BARKLEM (1951 - 2017) was a British writer and illustrator of children’s books, the most famous of which were the Brambly Hedge series. On leaving school she studied art at St Martins in London and after graduating became an illustrator.  Her husband suggested she turn her ideas, conceived while commuting on the train journey to art school, for a story about hedgerow life into a book.  She used this time to research English customs, flora and other geographical and cultural details for her Brambly Hedge series, the first four books of which were published in 1980, each representing one of the four seasons.  She wrote four more, the last published in 1984.  Her books became immensely popular, selling over 7 million copies worldwide and printed in over 13 languages, and her characters featured in merchandise such as cards and Royal Doulton china.
Thank you Jenny for the introduction to this superb artist , I love reading these to my daughter when she was young . I though they were originally published in the 1920/30 era but was surprised to find out it was the 1980s. They quickly became children’s classics and favourite books to look at with all those superb highly detailed illustrations, I still love looking at them and have the original books. Her sketch’s sold a children’s colouring books .
Illustration in my opinion, is such a difficult discipline to master, which is why I shunned it and opted for fine art at college  Looking at these, you can see why… But you can see that the emphasis is on drawing skills, something that we were talking about yesterday on a different thread. The degree of skill and attention to detail is phenomenal! Well beyond my abilities for sure! Amazing work and a great intro Jenny…
Wonderful Illustrations.
Her work is beautiful Jenny and thank you for the introduction. The best of children’s books appeal equally to the reading parent and obviously to the child, and these definitely fit that bill. I remember reading them to my girls, now in their forties, and to my eldest granddaughter now in her twenties, my daughter still has some of them ready for her children.  I love the detail, so much to see. Great!
Oh thank you Jenny spfor showing these, I remember them so well.   Just delightful.
Peter Knox, was born in Hartlepool in 1942 and trained at Hartlepool College of Art and Leicester College of Art.
