Tessa, the background would be mountains then a very stormy sky. The black area to the right is raincloud (very heavy rain). This is typical weather for our mountainous areas.
Yes, we are a very long way from everywhere except Australia. Very long expensive flights. I think that is why New Zealanders travel a lot, to get to see other places. Next year I am coming over to the UK to do a couple of back to back ship expeditions (no longer do road trips), from London to Glasgow, then Glasgow up to Iceland. Haven't ever seen your lovely country before, looking forward to it.

Thanks Sandra for you introduction to this interesting artist , I do admire the artist who put up with some unbelievable conditions etc to produce such amazing work. They brought the world to the attention of the public pre photography as it was the only way to convey what they had seen in these then out of the way places, they still are but much easier to reach now.
Some that I have selected from the many on line , hope I haven’t duplicated any already posted. The thing to remember is that a lot of the watercolours will have lost their vibrant look due to age , chemical reactions with the paper and the environment plus light over the years before they were properly preserved. No added preservatives or chemicals in the paints back then to help retain the colour for many years to come.
