Sir Mountford Tosswill (Toss) Woollaston (1910-1998). Regarded as one of the most important NZ artists of the twentieth century. Studied art at the Canterbury School of Art in ChCh. Became interested in modernism after moving to Dunedin. In 1958 he was awarded a fellowship which allowed him to travel to Australia where he studied Old Master paintings at the National Gallery of Victoria. Able to paint fulltime by the 1960s, another fellowship allowed him to travel to the US and Europe. He is most recognised for his landscape paintings, but was equally inspired by the human form and created many portraits. Throughout his career Woollaston was a frequently published writer of art criticism and commentary.

I have to be honest.  I looked at the name and the paintings and asked myself, 'is it April 1st?'.  I just don't get this style of art at all.  I did look up the artist and searched to see if there were any images that appealed, but the only one that came close has already been posted by Sandra (3rd one upon form the bottom, Riwaka Wharf, the one that looks like a shed by a lake).
Thank you for your introduction to this artist work Sandra, you did say that you were not sure what people would make of his work it will be interesting to see what folk think . I do need to look at it more before I make a comment, as I can’t make my mind up what I think about it at moment.
Always interesting to see different artists, even if their work doesn’t really appeal.  Of those posted by Sandra above, I quite like the fifth one down, it reminds me of Cezanne.

Yes, I see the similarity in Cezanne also - interesting range of different style with a variety of subject matter - thanks Sandra for your intro!
'Regarded as one of the most important NZ artists of the twentieth century.' Wow!
Not really my slice of kiwi fruit on first inspection - but  abstracts, which these basically are, are often not done  justice by a screen.  He  must have had SOMETHING,  even if I can't really see it.
I have looked at several galleries on line, showing  Toss Woollastons paintings, and seeing them hanging on the gallery walls, I do like a lot of them. I can understand why he is considered to be one of New Zealands foremost artists. Thank you Sandra for introducing us to an Artist that I had not heard of before.
It’s always very different to see paintings in a gallery, and to appreciate their size and vibrancy of colour.
That's what I wanted to say Tessa.
