You're dead right there Tessa. He starts with a big plus from me because I admire pen and ink drawings. He is a bit dark, but I guess he had to take what was offered to make a living. This is an illustration from the Bride of Christ (about the violation of Belgium in the First World War)...propaganda stuff...
...an unhappy subject, but a great drawing.
A few more....
A book illustrator has to reflect what's in the book. Maybe if it was a dark subject, this artist was the 'go-to' man. Who knows? This one is from the Pied Piper...where the town elders refuse to pay the piper.
I'm happy with dark...most folk tales and fairy stories are dark. I can revel in drawings such as these while I drink my coco.

There is no doubting his ability to draw , even if we are not keen on the subjects he draws , the details in the background etc are so well done . A few more I’m trying to find some different subjects but the majority are on the dark side , the last one is attributed to him and prints are sold of this unfinished work, it’s alley stage five .
