Some of these sketches are quite special.
I agree with you Alan and Sylvia, his sketch’s are really good. It shows how important sketching is to any artist professional or leisure painter,  it forms the basis of all artwork in my opinion .
That’s why I try and do some drawing/sketching every day if possible… most of my current sketchbook work takes me 15 to 30 minutes or so a day so not a lot of sacrifice is it? And I really enjoy doing them, which is a bonus… if you can’t draw, there’s a good chance that it will show through in your painting, particularly when dealing with proportions or architectural work. I can’t quite match JMW Turners volume of sketchbooks, almost 300 in total that he bequeathed to the Tate on his death (nowTate Britain), but I have amassed a fair few over the years! Great for reference material…
I unfortunately never kept a full sketch book until about five years ago , considering I’ve sketched from childhood what a lot of lost art. Be very interesting be able to look back especially some of the ones I did when I was overseas in the sixties and seventies, how thing must have changed and how my artwork must have changed.
It was certainly great that you gave this artist a second airing Paul! I have certainly seen some of the paintings you included and like many of I particularly the chef it’s full of movement . His sketching is great and illustrates the importance of doing it everyday to improve your drawing skills and techniques.
His sketches are really wonderful with great tonal work, capture of light and shadow. I actually prefer these to his paintings.
