Welcome to this weekends bonus artist thread my chosen artist the week is :
Brian Nolan 1931 - 2019 was a painter who sought to portray the essence of where he lived, initially the streets of Manchester and later the Peat District .
Brian’s passion for art and his determination to become an artist was apparent at an early age , his family recall him drawing all the time , sketching as they sat In the evening and spending nights in the air raid shelter drawing British and German planes in battle.
As a result of illness he missed his last year at school and left at fourteen with no qualifications, he began work cleaning floors before more fruitful employment as an advertising and print designer was secured in 1950.
Evening classes at Manchester Regional College of Art and Stockport College of Art help Brian to develop his self taught skills .
He had a great attachment to the Peat District as it was there thst he went to recover from his illness as a teenager.
In 1975 he was invited to contribute to the Artist Magazine.
In beginning to take watercolour seriously (July 1975) Brian stated that he liked to impart as much information as possible ,which he went on to do through a range of articles over the following decades in The Artist and Leisure Painter magazines.
Brian Nolan Leisure Painter 1983.
“ let your chief aim be to learn,. You will be setting your own pace, your own standards , with positive practical aims, whatever you choose to tackle, however insignificant it may first seem, It will become totally absorbing.
Since you cannot fail to learn, you must succeed, and since success is satisfying, the exhilaration experienced will spur you on “.
I hope you enjoy my selection of his work.

I remember now , I was in a bit of a spin at six this morning and looked at the wrong list . Silly thing is the painting with the roller looked familiar as I posted it but as I’ve seen so many painting I just thought I’d see it on line .
Apologies to everyone, I should have waited till later but to be honest it nearly did not get done .

Definitely worth a second look, Tessa's choice, the chairs is splendid. This one reminds me of the north of England, I'd like to think Yorkshire even though he was based on t'other side of the pennines. The wall, the lane, the trees and the figure, with small companion, remind of J Atkinson Grimshaw's Moonlit Lane - though it of by no means a copy.

Paul, I’m inclined to think it would be best to carry on as we are, and if one or two artists inadvertently get featured again, that’s fine. We’ve now looked at so many since the thread started that it would be difficult to select names to feature again even over two weeks - or did you mean asking people to post paintings from some of their favourite artists featured, as we did a year ago - it would be good to do this again now that we’ve looked at so many more since then. Will be interesting to see what others think.

Unless you want a break Paul, which I'd well understand, I agree with Jenny about ploughing onwards, ever onwards. We're bound to cover the same people every now and then if we're really drawn to their work, and human memory, as I know all too well, is a fragile thing at best. Plus - these were lovely paintings that it's well worth seeing again.
