Rachel Wright is a British textile artist. She grew up in an artistic family - her father paints and does wood engravings; her love of fabrics and sewing come from her grandmother. She was encouraged by one of her school teachers to study embroidery at university and first took an art foundation course followed by a degree in Fashion and Textiles at Birmingham City University, specialising in embroidery. This was followed by an MA course to further develop her ideas.
She describes her work as textile art which she says is her way of painting like her father does except she uses fabrics as her palette, the needle as her brush and the threads as her mark making. She starts with a pencil sketch on to the background material which is always cotton calico. From that she cuts and lays down pieces of fabric, then stitches them down. She initially did all the stitching by hand but now mostly uses a sewing machine which allows her to work more quickly. A large piece can take her anything from 2-5 weeks to complete. Her work mostly depicts nature - birds, animals, landscapes and seascapes, with Norfolk a particular inspiration for its huge skies and coastline.

Goodness me, how superb are those! I can only agree with Dixie, and can see how they would take many weeks to complete. Her initial composition is brilliant, easy to overlook I think.
Yes, a lovely start to the day, and I will also look at more of her work. Thanks Jenny, you have great taste!
