I've admired this artist for some time, but I like oddball art.  Most, if not all, of his art is based on his family.  An oddity is the shape of his works, he makes his own canvasses liberally battened to accommodated the strange shapes.  In a BBC documentary he confirmed that his main muse is his wife, but his subject matter extends to his wider family.  In concentrating all his efforts on his family, he wondered if he could maintain this specialised subject...but thus far he's had no problem.  (He's knocking on a bit now.) This oddly shaped painting is of his mother and her new husband... Many of his paintings of his wife are very intimate.  So... very much an oddball artist.  He's a member of the RA, and by all accounts very popular.
Funnily enoughLew I thought of you when I first saw them..not that you are at all "odd" .  But the detail and caricature figures are reminiscent of your work...incidentally he died in 2003.
I like his mother's portrait. It seems to be different from his regular style. What kind of canvases does he use and how does he make them?
Strange but impressive work. Some remind me of cut out of stage sets, and I’m fascinated to learn from Lew that he makes his own odd shaped canvases. I’ve often thought that we are content to be restricted to regular oblong or square shaped paintings simply because that’s what’s easily available.
Did he die in 2003?  I was surprised by that, so I've tried to check online.  I found one link saying he died in 2003, another said 2017 was a busy year for him.  Most of the sites I've visited seem to suggest he's still with us.  This ought to have been a simple thing to verify, but I've grown fed-up with looking.  He's a year older than me, so just a lad really. He gave a reason for his odd shaped canvasses...he said the images I have in my mind don't fit into retangular shapes, so neither do my paintings.
I think he’s still alive and painting Lew. According to his website he is now represented by the Chris Beetles Gallery and appears to be still active thankfully!
How odd that some site say he’s dead and other say different. He is definitely a odd character some of his paintings show his wife in almost pornographic poses,  each to there own as they say.
Fascinating artist, I imagine the back of his canvases are almost as interesting as the front!
I hadn’t thought of that Russell, given the shapes the backs must have been quite complicated. Be interesting to find out how he did some of them . He is obviously quite a talented artist but I struggle with the odd shapes of his paintings, I can’t even imagine planning a painting like his.
I really like the last two in Dixie's selection (above).  The garden pic is terrific, odd shape and odd perspectives included.  The last pic (on a plinth) is more like an installation than a painting.  I've seen videos of him assembling it.  It's big...as I remember the tallest part on the right must be six or seven feet tall.  But the various elements are all paintings (mostly). I guess he's an artist who might divide opinion, but I admire most of his work.   It's certainly original.
There was another artist called Anthony Green who was also born in 1939 and died in 2003.  He lived and worked in Torbay and painted impressionistic and abstract landscapes. I’ve seen the work of the Anthony Green we’re looking at before and am not sure what to make of it.  I like some of his paintings (especially the garden scene Paul has posted) but find the shapes of some his canvases rather uneasy on the eye - original and fascinating work, though.

What's even odder Lew , according to Dixie's  blurb  in his intro ,he was born in 1932 , even you are not THAT old..it does seem as though there are two of them as ]enny pointed out.    Or....it's a conspiracy.!
