Wow, I remember that!   I wasn't there, you understand!  I remember seeing the painting.  Seago was a favourite of the royal family, deservedly so.  That painting, considering the Duke was just short of 100 years old when he died, forcibly reminds us of the transience of human life - and that brief though it may be, we all deserve to enjoy what we can of it. I am, as some here know, on the left politically - I've served the Labour Party for some 40 years, and it would have been 50 if i hadn't taken ten years off to involve myself in a housing business; I have been, however, sickened and disgusted to read some comments on Facebook today from those who think themselves ever so radical, not beholden to the establishment, not respecting the legacy of the Queen, deluding themselves that a republic would be better (a quick look at the USA should have disabused them of that idea). I much prefer the way we've responded to this historic event on POL: maybe some of us are a bit chary of the pageantry and the Hip-Hip-Hooray element - it does seem to take us back to boyscout days of 70 years ago; it does grate even on me a liittle bit.  But we've responded here to the Queen, and the new King, as human beings with interests close to our own.  I can smile indulgently at elderly heralds tripping over their robes and court shoes - without despising the traditions, and certainly without laughing at the individuals.  I would find the bitterness, the bigotry, the worm of hatred and resentment, deeply depressing, did I not know that these people are simply sour and empty: this site reminds me that the majority are neither so contemptuous nor so cruel, not ignorant of our common history, nor so distanced from the majority of people who have been saddened by the Queen's death and feel sympathy for the King and the royal family generally.   I'm a socialist - not an envious, bitter, shrivel-souled, Philistine, with no respect for the best of this country.  If you've seen some of the twisted hatred online, know that these people don't speak for those of us whose whole history has been spent in the Labour movement: we know better, but POL has been important in reminding me, together with many of my Labour Party colleagues who have no truck with this callous lack of respect, that such people are in a pathetic minority and will stay there. I'm very sorry to have to drag these sentiments into this thread - I would never have done so, but I've been so nauseated by what I've read in the last few hours that I just felt I had to.  When you see some of the causes these people support, though: it begins to make a twisted sense.
I looked at that painting Alan and thought of posting at some point , it’s absolutely brilliant a photo could never have captured that moment any better.  I share you frustration Robert at the ridiculous comments that some people feel they need to make . As to this particular thread it was by pure chance that I decided two weeks ago to feature the now Kings artwork, fate is a very strange thing I won’t go into the odds, or the prompts that might have happened,  to me it’s pure chance that I picked this week. I did have second thought yesterday but decided to go ahead .  It’s been very difficult to find paintings by Prince Phillip but fortunately there are a few on site now.  Mention was made about the paintings  Winston Churchill by Sylvia , I will add him to the list.  Meanwhile Robert you certainly have earned a G&T and a restful evening.
Well said Robert.
Very well said Robert.
I thought I would finish this thread with a sketch the  The Duke of Edinburgh did for the design of a small window at Windsor .
He had great talent - this is really impressive.
Those are wonderful.  Lights and bushels .
He certainly was very talented, as is the King both did have lessons fro Seago as Alan mentioned earlier.
King Charles and his father were obviously very talented.  There are a good selection of Winston’s painting still in his studio at Chartwell if anyone wants to visit.  Which reminds me I found a fantastic exhibition of Grayson Perry’s huge works in Salisbury Cathedral last week.  Definitely worth a visit if you are in striking distance.
Yes I was thinking of his studio at Chartwell when I made the suggestion.  An interesting place to visit whatever your political persuasion.
I am still serving that same party, Robert.  And have been trying to argue with the same sort of people on twitter, that they should consider which heads of state have power over the people - and which have only money. Back on topic, it must have been a struggle for the Duke to paint whilst on a yacht, sort of blue on blue.
Norette - my mind was changed when I attended the Festival of Remembrance on behalf of my local party, and saw many of our most respected members leading the march - all of whom, then, were of my father's age and had served in the forces, and were remembering those whom they'd had to leave behind.  I hadn't much knowledge of all this back then, because my father would never, ever, speak about it.  But I learned a lot - and was henceforth very cross with those who affected to disrespect the armed forces, our country, and the royal family.  There are still too many of them, because they don't understand history and assume it doesn't apply to them because it's the history of the establishment and not of the working class.  Such is the ability of the left to lose the support of the working class whom they purport to represent - and Lord, it goes on and bloody on over generations!   Sorry, I've slipped into rant mode again - but it doesn't half get on my ..... nerves.
