That’s a superb painting Alan and I like you description of the scene at that more  interest .
Lovely work.  I especially like the Fish Sale, and this one which is quite different - At Noon Day - it really captures the heat of midday.  (I think we have another of the Newlyn group of painters on Paul’s list to look at later, Walter Langley.)

We certainly do Jenny in about  4 weeks or so . Anymore for the list please let me know.
There's a painting, similar in theme but not in execution, by another artist - I know I have a print of it somewhere: the fisherman's wife, awaiting his reutrn while not knowing if he ever will.  It's not by Stanhope Forbes, so I won't look for it and insert it here (might it be by Austen Abbey?) but it really does speak to the anxiety of wives left behind as their men go out to sea.  It's easy to dismiss Victorian narrative painting, but that narrative was often based in particularly cruel reality - it's just that a modern generation doesn't always see it.   EDIT: referring to Alan Morris's post of the fisherman's wife/sempstress a few postings back.

I won’t disrupt the conversation but I have a list of 14 painter who are said to be a part of same Newlyn school, I will post them at the end of the week and add them to the list . If anyone wants to do the intro to a particular artist please let me know .
Wonderful paintings.  I read somewhere that there's a revival of interest in Victorian paintings.  Many of them, like these, are simply magnificent. Stanhope Forbes has been accused of romanticising the harsh conditions the fisherman and their families lived under.  Some truth I guess.  But we have these great works to enjoy.
There is no doubt that Forbes staged many of his paintings.  One commentator suggested that many of the people depicted looked far too well fed!

Staged or not they are superb paintings . I’m a sucker for his country scenes , I admire his artwork a great deal and  Alan's intro has prompted me to look deeper at his work . I have to stop myself from loading more .
Tremendously skilled artist and yet another I wasn't really familiar with. I have to say that I admire many Victorian artists and yes including the Pre Raphaelites! The Lady Lever art gallery in Port Sunlight has a superb collection of Victorian art and is a fabulous place to visit.
Isn't it just Russell..a bit special.
Paul, Russell has mentioned the Pre-Raphaelites - could we please add Dante Gabriel Rossetti to your list?  Perhaps sometime, maybe at the end of this week’s thread, you could post a list of all the artists you’ve got on your backlog? (Expect most of us have forgotten by now which artists have already been suggested!) Thanks.
