An interesting introduction, Michael. This is a very early painting of his that I hadn’t seen before and came across when looking through his work again.  It’s called Port of Odessa - he painted it while studying there for a number of years.  Lovely style quite different to most of his later work. These are a few of my favourite paintings of his - I especially like the colourful cottage landscape.

Hi.  I've just taken out a membership  (I was magazine and website subscriber a long time ago)  and am really just browsing at the moment and trying to find out what I can do. I love the Kandinsky paintings especially Port of Odessa.  I've not come across it before and I just love the colours and the style.
I saw the Sunflwers in Amsterdam and was underwhelmed.  So thank you Robert for the explain...BUT why in that case are the lovely yellows so bright and vivid in the other pic I posted , the  Crow  and Cornfield also other yellows in other paintings. Did he just use his naff yellow on the Sunflowers and there were alternatives. Glad your kitty is ginger Helen...and  I think  I'm lovely as wellTessa. .
Sylvia Evans on 18/05/2022 09:58:11 Good question - a different batch, perhaps?  Then as now, not every paintmaker is equal.  I will research this, but not disrupt this thread now we've got on to Kandinsky.
Janis welcome to the thread and for taking the time to join in and comment , hope you will continue to do so. If you have ant artist that you particularly like please let me know and I will add then go our list , you don’t have to be knowledgeable and know everything about your choice. A few lines as a intro and say why you like their work but of course if you do know more about them then please share it with us. It doesn’t need to be a well know artist in-fact its been interesting looking at relatively unknown artist , and quite a treat when it’s someone we have not heard of or seen their work before .  Robert it will be interesting to see what you find out from your research.
What a superb introduction Michale full of information. Having look through a large selection of this work I certainly liked so d of his earlier painting and quit a few of his later works as well. I have selected several that really appeal to me, I found it harder to select from the geometrical painting the ones I have for some reason stood out.  Sorry if I have doubled up,on someone’s choice .
I like his work, very different for his time and some of his work looks very futuristic. His work was innovative and interesting at the time he painted it and it remains so today, I think. A couple a picked out. Railroad to Murnau Yellow Rose. Composition 1 1910. I think this was a b/w photo taken as the original painting was lost.
I must admit I like his earlier work best, when he had an obvious love affair with colour.  E,g. Autumn Landscape with Boats.
Some really good examples of his work. I know I'm the minority in favouring his later geometric abstracts but i have to say that his earlier works are quite exceptional. The first three posted by Paul above are superb examples - so colourful, so exciting.
Some more of his early work the more I see the more I like his artwork and that includes the geometric work as well.   I have included some  geometric paintings I think are superb , particularly the blue one it just shouts out, it’s called How the blue sounds. I tried to load three others but unfortunately they came up not able to load.  J
Upward 1929 The Last Judgement 1912 I do like Kandinsky’s work…I also like Paul Klee, both artists are quite similar in some works. I saw a similarity in ‘Upward’.  ‘The Last Judgement’ is full of colour, and I must admit I looked at it for a while before I posted it.

Great examples Ellen and don't forget Miro.  I have to say I am so pleased to see such a positive response to his work - especially his abstracts. It's a genre so often dismissed and rarely ever features in the Gallery so perhaps this might be a turning point - it would be great if others tried their hand at it. Here's one of mine.
That’s a lovely painting Michael and if you had not said it was your own work it would have passed as Kandinsky.  I’m in the middle of working through a painting at the moment, unfortunately it’s taking me long these days but I had decided to have a go at a geometric painting. Need to get the compass, set square etc out to it will be very wavy lines the worst I can do is make a mess of it and a fool of myself.
